Jack Dempsey Male or Female urgent help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
guys is a little young to fully color up, IMHO, I am staying with a male. :)

Close call. I'd say female. Here is my male when he was smaller. Notice there is not color on cheeks or lower jaw.

that`s a female. how big is the little guy?

I have never been confuse as I am now. Not only I got divided opinion, I also got photos which confused me even more.
@pops says it is a male, while he post video link of two females just the same as mine. In that case I would say mine is female.
@oriqua says it is a female, while 1st photo is similar to mine (around head) except that fish on photo has much more body colour then mine; on 2nd photo left fish (smaller one) looks just like mine; 3rd photo I could't say it has much body color; 4th photo looks like 1st where fish has more body colour then mine but head is similar to mine.
@ehh photo you gave of young male, also does not show significant body colour. But I can see it does not have any bearding colour except around eyes.

And in some cases I could easily say it is different species - in some cases JD's are much more brownish compare to mine which body is much more black compare to other.

Based on photos I made decision it is a female. So I went to LFS to get me a male JD, and I showed a photo of mine JD to seller who convinced me that I have male JD. So I went to another LFS where they had both female and male JD and I showed photo of mine JD as well and seller confirmed it is a male and I took female JD there. But when I introduced new female to my tank - after rearrangement of decoration - my old JD start chasing it till close death. So I rescued new female JD and put it in another tank for a while until I find better solution for her.
I did compare both my old JD and new female JD to find out what I have and found that both has fewer body spangles and both has some blu marks on beard with exception that new female has more blueish beard and has less body spangles. So I believe I was right from photo comparison and that I have female. So I went back to LFS to get male JD which I could see has much more body spangles then my JD and doesn't have blue beard. Since when I introduced him to my tank I have no issues so far. So all seems photo I post represent female JD - so congratulations to all who were right and thanks as well.
