Male Cichlasoma Octofasciatum.

Cichlasoma isn't a valid genus anymore. It's "exCichlasoma" until they decide how to break it up.

But it is now currently in the Rocio genus (to my knowledge).

So it's actually Rocio octofasciata.

Here is the taxonomic history if you're interested:
(from http://www.cichlidae.com/gallery/species.php?id=169)

Heros octofasciatus, Regan, 1903, original combination.
Cichlasoma hedricki, Meek, 1904, junior synonym.
Cichlasoma octofasciatum, Meek, 1904, new combination.
Heros (Cichlosoma) octofasciatus, Regan, 1904, new combination.
Cichlasoma (Archocentrus) octofasciatum, Pellegrin, 1904, new combination.
Cichlosoma (Parapetenia) octofasciatum, Regan, 1905, new combination (wrong genus spelling).
Cichlosoma biocellatum, Regan, 1909, junior synonym.
Astatheros octofasciatus, Jordan et al, 1930, new combination.
Nandopsis octofasciatus, Kullander, 1996, new combination.
Archocentrus octofasciatus, Schmitter-Soto, 1998, new combination.
Nandopsis octofasciatum, Burgess, 2000, new combination (should have been octofasciata).
Rocio octofasciata, Schmitter-Soto, 2007, new combination.

If we're gonna use scientific names, might as well use the right one. ;)

is it for sure a male though? :nilly:

He looks good.

Certainly looks like male coloring except for the blue on the cheeks which is normally a female trait that is absent in males. Very colorful either way. My biggest one spooks really easily too.

Interesting. I wasn't aware of the change. Thanks for the info.

thanks :) hopefully after settling down and eating properly again, he'll look better than ever. The last guy fed him turtle pellet lol. what should i feed him beside big cichlid pellets?

Just a high quality cichlid pellet. Turtle food doesn't contain all the nutrients a fish needs. Hense "fish food"- for fish "turtle food-for turtles." IMO he obviously didn't know what he was doing and should have just given him to you for free.

He's really easily spooked! i walked into my room and he bolt around the tank like crazy. Dramatized maybe

Was he in a high tank? Is he in a lower tank now? When I had my JD in my 125 we built the stand high so the tank sits at eye level for me at 6'2 and he'd always be out and come right to the top for food when I walked over and race to the food with my Oscar. When I moved him to a 100g that's much, much lower (I didn't build the stand) he hides all the time, never comes up to the top like he used to when I walk over, and gets spooked sometimes when I walk by the tank and darts from one side to the other shooting debris/substrate up everywhere. Even waits for me to walk away to go to the top and get his large pellets which is totally opposite what he did in the 125g.

I'll buy some pellets for him! I read online that he also eats crickets and worms? Should that be part of a staple diet or just an occasional treat? He was in what looks like, a 20 gallon tank lol. He looks like he's enjoying himself more now, swimming around a bit. Thanks for sexing him for me! Now i need to find a nice female for him lol. ;)

OP - nice save

jon m- nice male, would love to pair off my female w/ a male like that
