can i put a jack in my piranaha tank
Blues take longer to grow than Oscar’s, and blue’s aren't very hardy when they are small. Remember blues are wimps and stress very easily (and die from stress quickly)! Keep it by it’s self until it reaches 3 ½ inches or more and let it establish a territory. Then add the other fish. DO NOT PUT IT IN WITH THE PIRANAHA!!!
I’m not sure if an Oscar and BJD will be ok together in the long run though. But I highly recommend getting a few BJD’s. They have a great color of blue, and some have golden bodies while others are strictly blue. I can’t wait until mine mature.

I bought 3 electric blue jack dempseys about a month ago, they are still really young but I can tell that they arent as fierce as a regular one. One was always staying in the dark for a about a week but it got better. I cant wait till they get bigger so I dont have to worry about them as much. I am doing a water change every two weeks. The water always seems kind of cloudy and I dont know why. I previously had regular jack dempseys and the water was never cloudy. I have live plants, does anyone think if I add more plants that it would make the tank healthier?

just wondering... are jack dempsey hard to take care of? i read that it quickly gets parasite  not sure if it's true... how long does it take for them to be adult and at full size? got a new 60 gallon... wanna get 5-7 (2-2 1/2" )Electric Blue Jack Dempsey... not sure if it would be enought (aquarium) until they group up. :naughty:

anybody know how big they get? :D

Defenitely too small for 5-7 BJD !!! Maybe one? Unless it's a growout...

Blues take a loooong time to grow. Mine is 10", and 3 years old (my avatar). It is true that they are more prone to diseases and parasites, so you have to be experienced to keep them and be willing to put in the time/effort. As soon as the water's bad, they get sick...so clean water all the time is the key.

So in response to the thread starter, some other already mentioned it...get the BJD, grow it up to a good size (5-6" at least), then go get the oscars.

i have two jds and they are far from agressive

I use to have approx. 20 years ago same time 5pcs Jack Demseys full size and those where much worse (agressive) than what I have now... this one is piece of cake... it just take care of it's own corner and be happy.

are you dead set on a blue? would something else work for you?

Blue Dempseys are beautiful but are a community tank fish to me. They also need perfect water like discus. I know I am always suggesting Green Terrors but they a beautiful fish that can hang with the big boys. I say get a Male GT!
