Jack Dempsey - Visual Growth Rate

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey everybody, update time.

I am starting to notice some growth, I would say total length is approximately 2 1/2". I am guessing that the fish has grown 3/4" in the past 3 weeks.

The fish has been eating the spirulina infused brine shrimp, Hikari Gold, and I picked up Hikari Bloodworms that have 40% more protein and 10% less moisture than the Bloodworms I have been using. The JD eats like a pig.

She/he is very owner responsive. If my wife or I walk into the room, the fish is swimming at the front of the glass. The moment the lid on the cover is lifted, the Dempsey is right there ready to be hand fed.

I took some good shots today, in my opinion anyway. Here are the settings I use on my camera: F-2.8, 1/8s Shutter Speed, +0.3 Exposure, 64 ISO, and I have the "close up" setting on.

Time for another update. It has been two weeks and there has been some definate growth. I would say total length is 3 1/4" and the JD has fattened up quite a bit. I am also leaning toward male, rather than female. What does everyone think. I will try to get some better pictures this week.

As far as diet goes, he has been eating a bunch of the norm, as well as a huge horse fly, a good sized slug, and a medium sized cockroach (found outside of our apartment thank god!)

I have noticed some definate growth width-wise, the fish has become much thicker and the size of its mouth has probably doubled.

wow, you are having a much quicker growth rate then my juvi JD. Mines also jet-black most of the time, of course he is in a heavily stocked 55 right now. Once the fish start getting bigger im deciding my final stock for the 55 and placing everybody else in a 125 or 150.

Thanks all, it sounds like there is still some disagreement when it comes to the sex of this fish. Anyone else want to take a stab at sexing?

elting, you have seen my JD's and from the looks of that fine specimen you've been showing on here, it's definitely a male dude, no doubt!
