iv had both and IME id take the oscar, my jd would always hide in his cave only comming out at feeding time but teh oscar was always out an about doing his usual antics, very amusing and impressive fish
I prefer the Jack Dempsey, especially mine. The JD I bought at Petsmart for 5 dollars and it was worth it too. This JD minds its own business and will show the other cichlids who is boss, when the other ones decide to act up in the tank.
I havent kept an Oscar so I wont comment on them, but from my experience with "Buford" my jack dempsey, he is the most personable fish next to my Midas. He's never really been much of a hider, but he was very submissive when I introduced a larger male Midas. The Midas never chased Buford, but Buford always gave him a wide berth. Now they hang with each other alot.
My jd is always front and center. First at the food line. He's quite the predator too. He picked off, one by one, a small shoal of 2" tiger barbs over about a month. The split in his dorsal was a gift from a jewel cihlid that at one point was bigger than Buford. Tore him up pretty bad so I seperated them for about 2 months. Reintroduction seemed fine for all of about an hour. After that, Buford, who was much bigger now, decide the jewel needed to go. Before I could get the net out of the stand, he had gutted the jewel and was dragging the body around the tank like a trophy. That was the last fish he didnt get along with, but still has the chunk from his fin missing as a reminder.......
One of my first cichlids. Petsmart for about 5 bucks. Not the prettiest, but definately one of our favorites....
It's really hard to pick between the two. I have both. I had to get my JD, Ripper, his own tank because he was whoopin' my Oscar when they started to grow up. I really, really like them both, but I've considered selling my JD tank complete setup w/ my JD to make my move in the future easier, and while contemplating any other fish I could and couldn't part with my O is definitely the main fish I couldn't part w/ so I guess if you take that info into account, if I absolutely had to pick one to keep, it would be my Oscar, Rocky.
I have a Tiger oscar, a male EBJD and a regular female JD. the oscar is the most vicious, to other tankmates and even to my hand. the JDs are surprisingly very docile for me, Don't bother any other fish, and are not picky eaters like the oscar. I am very pleased with the oscar, I knew what I was getting when I bought him, but I recently only found great fondness for the JD's now that the EBJD is bigger, I have decided to get a nice reg female. If I had to choose between the two kinds Id keep the JD.
