I have a 65 g. with a fast growing male Jack, 2 Salvini male, n ,female paired, and about 4 mixed convicts. The thing I'm wondering is, will the jd ever take over the tank? I've had a jd before and he was a badass, but this is the first one I've had from juvi(about 1") now he's pushin the 6" mark. The salvini pair pretty much rule things in the tank but are not bully's by any means. I'm wondering, if when the jack is pushin the 10" mark could he overthrow the also 6" male sal, and his honey, or can salvini pretty much hold their own even at a smaller size?

This is what I found on net about Salvini:

"General: One of the most colorful cichlids. It is less aggressive than some other Cichlasoma cichlids. It is prone to hiding when in with very aggressive fish. Under optimal conditions that will develop lots of gold and red coloration."

IME JD can get aggressive as they grow.. and you have a lot of fish in a 65 Gallon...

well i have a 3 1/2" salvini that dosnt mind going head to head with much bigger aggresive cichlids like 5" convicts 9" tilapia zilli and other's.
it all depands on its personalty.

my juvie salvini was found in a tank with a pair of jags at the lfs and he was holding his own. he now rules my 75.

I've seen salvini classified as highly aggressive (I've seen them called a Mini-trimac which says a lot because of the aggressive nature of the trimac) and intolerant and also as rather peaceful. this tells me that either personality varies greatly from fish to fish or the people that classify them as peaceful have only kept juveniles and may have gotten rid of them or had them die before they reached maturity whereas the people that classify them as highly aggressive are probably speaking from experience with fully mature adult breeding pairs. a breeding pair will absolutely be far more aggressive and territorial and it sounds like you could easily wind up with a breeding pair of sals and maybe even a breeding pair of cons. if so your tank will turn into a warzone and I'd bet either your jack or the unpaired cons and sals will be the first to go.

ultimately, you will really need to get another tank or 2 so that breeding pairs can be kept by themselves, or get rid of some fish so that you only have say 1 Jack, 1 con and 1 sal (all males or all females) and maybe some dithers. otherwise you will most likely suffer some casualties as the fish grow and reach maturity.

also, male sals have been known to grow to at least 8" and I've also heard claims (with no photographic proof though) of people who've kept males that grew up to a foot long. either way, even an 8" male sal would not be too undersized compared to a full grown adult male Jack. :)

Thanx for the replies, I'll take all of them into cosideration. My 65 is actually kinda chill, but I do agree a bigger setup is coming. I feel, my fish besides the convicts are about half grown, so I do have some time. The salvini have pretty much claimed a corner under a driftwood branch. I also have a very large driftwood chunk that kinda rests on its side in the middle of the tank. It acts as kinda a divider that my fish have to swim around to get to the other side. The jd usually chills on the other side and is hidden from the salvini. My cons usually just swim everywhere, they act almost as backround fish. They do rumble fom time to time, but thats typical con behaviour. My fish also swim next to each other close enough to touch at times and dont fight. The occasional fronting, and facing maybe a whap! on the side and they split. Again, thanx for the replies and the help.
