Jack Dempsey vs. Salvini

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The salvinis should get about 7-9 inches if they don't start breeding before then. The convicts can get 6inches if they don't start breeding. the dempsey will only get 10inches quickly if not bred. don't worry the pr. will be able to stand the dempsey down if it even becomes that agressive the convicts make for great anger disbursement so no one will be focused on.

I've got 2 male jack dempseys, both of which are pretty nasty in temperment. especially the big colorful one, he flares up and shakes in front of any fish he considers a rival, and eventually ends up beating on them. I would just watch carefully and hope for the best. personally, there were a couple of fish i had to get rid of to ensure they wouldn't be killed

jd's barly ever get much over 8-9" salvinis get 6" on average, dont underestimate a breeding pair. one breeding pair of salvinis will kill a jd. end of story. just like people fish are hard to fight 2 on 1 even if they are smaller. i would watch closly over the next year ithink your headed for trouble in that small of a tank.

Yea, but like I said I think I got a little time. I am ready to make a move here in a month or so. A new place for me, and probably a nice new tank for my fish. I'm leaning toward either a 90g. or a 120 g. xtra high. I eventualy want to either turn my 65 into an african tank, or a single species tank. thanx for the replies on my jd, salvini pair problems.

As you've noticed yourself...tank set-up has alot to do w/ possible compatibility. Lots of hidey-holes & plants enable the faster little guys to evade the big lunkers. I've got a little flowerhorn that posts up against the big JD & Texas....until they call his bluff & he books tail for the trees. :D

I would go with a 90g, much easier to aquascape and do maintenance on, I have a 110 it it's a pain in the arse. Plus you'll have the same amount of surface area, which is the most critical thing....Plus you'll save a few bucks as well...

Yea I like 90's, they seem like a little longer 65 g. but it just seems everyone is pro 120 g. or up. Right now as it stands I have my 65 g. at my girlfriends place, but I live there too. I have also a 40 g. high tank across town at my parents, in their basement. So....... I really need my own place. It's in the works within the next month or so, but I'm really not into huge apts. either, so I fear a 120 g. might be a little too large. Thanx again for the info. Those 120 xtra high tanks are still kickass. maybe someday....

Well I just did a 40% water change, and moved some not all decor. around. It seems the female salvini is scraping the driftwood branch, and the male sal is digging a pit. The male jd still chills on the other side. No rumbling yet.

I've noticed that my 2 jacks were passive when they were smaller,,,,My Texas cichlid (male 7") , and two Flowerhorns(5"male-6"female) use to rule my 55gal. Now things have change since my male texas cichlid(7") died, My jacks(5"female-7"male) have stepped up and are now running things. They keep my 2 very mean Flowerhorns in line.
