Jack Dempsey's a mean son of a gun.

Use dither fish to take the JDs aggression away from the Texas.

Use silver dollars, tinfoil barbs, tiger barbs, giant danios OR other cichlids like black convict (get only 1 to prevent breeding).

Good luck!

My jack use to rip the gills out of feeders because he couldn't swallow them so being that aggressive i kinda wanted to find him a new home but i love his color and the positives out weight the negatives to i kept mine even though hes mean.

Got the little Tex out of the tank and gave him back to the LFS. Got a Chaestoma milesi instead. Also picked up a few feeders who have already magically disappeared.

why are you feeding feeders to a fish you already think is too aggro? that is just going to bring his aggression out more not to mention the high risk of parasites if you got them from the petstore

my 8" jack lives with a 14" midas and a few 3-5" cons in a 125.the jack completely ignores everything smaller than him and avoids the midas, works very well. also, keeping a bichir with him is a nice option especially a delhezi.

Actually didn't realize that feeders would bring out aggression. Thanks for the tip.
yeah you def want to stick to pellets and maybe lower the temp a degree or 2 to keep his agro down as low as possible

like the above people said a jd will leave alone some fish that dont look like him.. therefore a senegal bichir will work, my jd never bothered my senegal bichir, but beated the heck out of my green terror, which were the same size, also 2 baby jds wont work out one jd will be more of a good fighter. try adding bigger aggressive cichlids than him like a red devil, or a bigger texas so it will hold it self, but then the texas will pick on the JD

JDs are aggressive, super mean fish, hence the name "jack dempsey", they live up to their name, fishes that my jd had left alone(mine is an sob like urs) was plecos, bichirs, ghost knife fishes, gouramis, but most cichlids he attacked no matter what, they had to be bigger than him, but i had a 4" Severum wit a 3" jack dempsey the severum would beat the jd in lip locking as he was bigger, and the sev is a peaceful so didnt chase the loser JD all the time

If you were able to keep a Tex long enough for it to fill out a bit, I'm pretty sure that it would not have a problem living with a JD. In fact, the Jd would probably find life hard for itself. I have had both species and the Tex are more aggressive by far. All the JDs that I have had and seen are generally laid back with only a little aggression. I don't consider them nearly as mean as Tex or RDs.

my dempsey is in a tank almost four times the size of the 60g he was in. he's not the biggest or smallest fish and his aggression levels have vanished. in the 60g he killed the other dempsey and one day i caught him with a whole algae eater in his mouth. just a little tail hanging out. in the new tank he has his little spot but doesnt guard it with his life like other fish ive owned.
