Jack Dempseys: Love them, hate them, why?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't hate them, I just find them kinda boring. They are really common, and for a fish so aggressive and large they aren't really all that pretty to look at imo. I'd rather have something with more color if it's going to be taking up that much space. I love the colors on the EBJD, considering one of those someday but it's pretty far off unless someone gives me one. The youngsters in the store I work at never pay any attention to anything outside the glass. Not much fun for me..

hahahahhahahhahaha Any Midas or flowerhorn i hate they look like crap. They look like they have ball on there head.

I honestly am not a huge fan of the golfball sized lump. I still love both fish though, but I prefer the ones with a smaller hump. Frontosa and several other cichlids have this, I think it looks nice when its a more modest size.

I agree I hate cichlids too their so dumb the way they are always there to greet you. The way they flare and display to eachother when interacting or breeding. Or how about their excellent parental care. It's so dumb to see two dedicated cichlid parents protecting a cloud of fry or to see a flamboyant male dance and flare his fins to attract a mate. And it's stupid how some seem to recognize their owners. And the fact that there are 1000's of species all over the world that can be so drastically different from eachother and exhibit some of the most unique behavior in the natural world s retarded.

Yea I would much rather get a bare tank and watch arowanas, datnoids, and pacu swim around and around and around until I decide to feed them. Only then do they become remotely interesting. And peacock bass are great the way they seem to just drift in the water column.

Why anyone would keep fish so unique and interesting is beyond me...

Take it personally? Lol Jeeze I said its all personal preference, and thst I wasnt trying to upset anyone. If you love them so much, marry one. See how much joy they bring you then.

Sir, the great part about fishkeeping is we all have a taste for something different. And no I did not take it personally I just find it really fascinating how you come all the way to the cichlid section, find a thread that has nothing to do with people's preference on weather they like cichlids or not(it's the cichlid section I assume we all like cichlids in general), and post on how much you don't like cichlids.

That's like me driving to Ontario and walking around complaining about how I hate Canada.

I've kept and bred several JD's through the years. I actually had one pair that was pretty active. But as a whole I can say that the behavior of the species bores me. I have considered keeping the red variant or EBJD though. So I can't say that I exactly hate them but I can say that they are one of my least favorite cichlids.

I don't hate them, but they are EVERYWHERE
I tend to like the species that are harder to find.
