I love my Dempsey, but what matters is that he loves me! He begs just like an Oscar and chases his woman around with fondness. A fast grower and very intelligent companion, I have had a very good experience with my first JD. Eats everything, never hides, is a rather good-looking specimen compared to the majority of photos I've seen as a guide. I look forward to his aging, lazy days and hope he will enjoy his sunset years in my care.

I love jds but since the first one I owned died many years ago I could never find one to live up to how much I liked my first dempsey

I had one years ago, and it was a female so it never fully spangled. Also it was super territorial, but not intolerant or aggressive like plenty of other cichlids. I think it's a good cichlid for a community tank, but it does tend to just stake out a place and hover there just as other people are explaining it does. I really love the natural pearls on them, but I don't care for the EBJD adults. As babies they look really neat, almost a fluorescent blueish/yellow covering their body, but when they grow up they look malnourished and decrepit; their mouth half open all the time, their spine looks like it can't support their body, I don't know. They remind me of the inbred fish that have crooked spines and can't swim straight that you see in chain pet stores all the time. But I think they kind of look like a poor man's Umbee if they're healthy! Nothing wrong with that!

Thats because they ARE horribly inbred fish. Thats why they look messed up as adults.

I like em I had one that was hand tame and mean as hell to other fish he would let me pick him up instead of a net to move him to other tanks and shortly after he would have everything terrified of him he lived up to the name very well
