Jack Dempseys

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree with the "skittish", but the ones I've had weren't timid . . . I think they're awesome fish, and the one fish I've traded in that I'd like to have back is my JD

it grew fairly quickly, was about 8" after a year or so . . .

When you say timid, you mean they are the type that gets spooked easy? Or are they the type that are out front and not afraid? Hows the growth rate?

They are highly territorial and will harass or kill smaller fish. I think he means they are always out front and not afraid. Mine acts happy to see me and I hand feed him.

Mine is 6 inches at about 6 months old, lives in a 55 gallon

beauty . . .

I have an EBJD now (he's about 3") and while I do like the EBJD colors, I think a full-grown JD is a really impressive sight . . .

My EBJD is hand feeding at 3" and is pretty fearless.. the RGJD's I have in my pond were skittish as hell when they were in my 90G. It's pretty much a crapshoot as far as personality goes.

The largest jd I've ever seen was 12". They generally are 8" for males and 6" for females. Minimum tank size for one would be a 40 breeder. They're mild tempered and timid. There are a few types of jds, there are standard, gold, and electric blue jack dempseys. They do well with other mild tempered cichlids. All i can think of off the top of my head. :D

+1. They're not very active fish, so a 40 Breeder would be fine for one. If you wanted a pair, a 55 would do just fine.

my jd isnt what could be called skittish but he does like to hide in his spot alot. for temperment he isnt the ruler of the tank but he doesnt back down from anyone.
here a pic of him hes about 9 inches now and hes about 2yeaars old,
