In my experience... the parents will guard the healthy fry until they are ready to spawn again... then they will either eat the older fry to protect the younger fry or at least kick them out of the nest. In smaller tanks they usually get eaten in larger tanks they get chased off... By this point the larger fry are starting to show aggression to their smaller litter mates.
In the end usually only a small handful of a brood survives... unless the keeper steps in to change conditions...

My females rarely eat while caring for eggs/wigglers... and often skip meals when caring for fry... Fish can easily go a week without eating... As long as you are making food available and he is choosing to skip meals, I don't think you have anything to worry about...
