You should be able to tell at that size. Mine will change according to mood. He fills in between the spots with black to give himself stripes or larger lateral line spots. His stripes look like a V when he gets them. Here he is...this Jag is 12.5"+. If you squint your eyes looking at the pic you can clearly see the spots. Yours looks great btw, I can see his nice purple sheen.

With this picture you can truely see why it is called a Jaguar Cichlid. Look at the pattern. Beautiful.
