JAG Down (sort of)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This attack i cant understand. Not one of those polys have ever shown aggression towards other non polys

Have you not reported that jags would even push the polypterus around during the feeding? Perhaps polys can hold a grudge.

That both have been attacked is unexpected to me too. This says this is unlikely to be random.

A dispute over a hide is excluded from the way your tank's set up.

The only two things I can think of right now are the grudge / dispute over a tasty morsel of feed or a predatory attack. Could have anyone gotten hungry enough to test taste the jags?

Personally I think it's a predatory thing... LJ can try to take meals larger than they can handle ime, repeatedly at that, and your polys are much bigger than the jags, maybe not in girth but in length and that's enough for them to try ime. Polys aren't really territorial to non polys. I've never had an aggro poly personally but the ones reported were always toward other polys from what I remember. So I don't think it's that.

Could be anything but imo or my guess is it not being predatory. The wounds looked to have not been all that fresh. There was dead and decaying skin and fat. I could be wrong though. Could very well be someone got a little too hungry BUT there have been smaller fish in with these guys.

My teugelsi is pretty territorial does somewhat tolerate the vulture cat in his area but f it who knows.

Shame the jags reverted right back to hiding in the smaller tank. It appears they liked the extra space in the 300

Ouch that’s just horrible. If you are really invested in finding out you could install some security cameras and set them to watch the tank and watch the playback if you ever decide to put the jaguar catfish back.

Thx for the suggestion but regardless of which poly did it i wouldnt rehome any of them lol.

Its weird though because this current group has been vetted lol they have lived with cats for quite some time.

thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter whats your thoughts on the vulture as a possible culprit?

No way.

First, they don't do it to healthy and calm (not having a meltdown) tankmates.

Second, they cannot take a bite like that.

The following is rated PG-13.

They can strip some skin and flesh only if they can get a hold of a piece of skin hanging or of a soft tissue / muscle (a piece of skin or an open wound is a must-have prerequisite) but to tear a piece out of an intact skin like that they cannot. They would engage in persistent biting of the fins and body and there would be a lot of non-skin-piercing bite marks before they dig down deep enough the make a cut and get a hold of a skin piece hanging. Then they gang up and strip.

Thx i figured as much lol looking for excuses to exonerate my beloved polys h

Now that this happened, do you think it was them before as well rather than the wolf?

No that was definitely the wolf. The wounds were totally different. I really dont think this was aggression tho. Im leaning more towards something viktor suggested. The jags being pushy during feedings. You know how polys kind of snap like crazy when they eat. Ugh who knows its a shame though they were soo much fun to watch in the 300. Guess the 75 is gonna be there new home
