Jag tank size?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would love to own a tetradon mbu,but the largest tank I have is 7x2 x2 so I sadly will probably never own one.
You can't just cram poor fish into the space you have available without considering the welfare of the animal.

I've got my jag in a 77 but its only until I can reseal my 120g. That being said he's def not the biggest jag, roughly 12"

I wouldn't call him an extremist. I have owned a male jag that was 18 to 19" which would be ridiculous in a 75g, not all get that size, but they certainly can.

Also, it really irks me when someone comes here asking for advice and then completely dismisses the majority opinion because its not what you want to hear.

Im not dimissing it :) im just saying, he has different ideas that i do. In his opinion no Central should be kept in anything less than a 4' tank, which i find ridiculous. That was the basis for the "extremist" statement. A Jag not being able to live in a 75 is an acceptable opinion., IMO

Extremist. Iol I now have visions of him blowing up somebodys goldfish

Lol

I don't think he was expecting "negative results" from us lol.

By the way, stanz isn't an extremist. He's awesome. Don't pretend like his opinion is bad. I wish more people had the same opinions as him. If more people were a bit more "extreme" no one would keep defending the option of putting a fish that will likely reach 15" into a 75 gallon aquarium.

I agree that his view of things are very important. If i had the money and space to keep multiple big tanks im sure i would be on his side of the argument, but i dont, so...

My jag pair is in a 75 temporarily and they are not comfortable, they did have their first successful spawn in there but clearly miss the 125. View attachment 1173229 View attachment 1173230 you can't tell me that he doesn't already dwarf this tank, and their both gonna do a lot more growing.

Yeah seeing it like that makes the tank look smaller... Hmmm

Thanks for the back up.
Ehh that's very nice of you to say.

My views are my views right or wrong,I have no desire to get into an argument with LogiBear but if you ask a question on a forum you may not always like the answer.

Im not trying to argue either. It wasnt meant as insulting, i jut think that you give fish too much space.

But there is no such thing, obviously.

As ive said before: if i had more tanks that were bigger im sure i would see things from your perspective. But i dont so to me it looks like you are just "wasting" (not really though) all that space.

I hope that makes sense? If not pm me and i can try to make that sound clearer.

Again, not meant as fighting words :) i accept your answer as valid, especially in such a borderline idea as this. Some people say sure and some say no, its in the middle. So please domt think im counting out your, or anyones, opinions.

I do things differently, and most would think me unorthodoxed, but still nonetheless, successful with my own ways.....I kinda feel the same way....fish need space, but when I look into my tanks and see all the empty space, I just say to myself, "Well, there's some room to rescue something from the LFS". I get it all the time......50% of the time I'm in a LFS....and it doesn't matter who, even the better ones the fish are not as good off as they would be with me.

If you had a 150g and your LFS had a 7" Dovii in a 29g for several months and they said no one even looks at it and the ones who DO... don't want a fish even half that size, who will ultimately be better for the fish? You or them? Then consider probably half the fish you DON'T buy from the LFS end up DEAD anyway. I say give them a chance for a life.

The idea that any c/a cichlid, even the smallest ones need a four foot tank is not extreme.
These are intelligent, inquisitive, territorial animals that need space.
At the end if the day we will never be able to give them the space they deserve, and no matter how big our tanks are it will be nothing close to their natural habitat no matter how hard we try.
If people with small tanks keep buying these potential tank busters from local fish stores then local fish stores will keep stocking them (supply on demand)
The majority of local fish stores stock is small community tank stuff because that's what sells the most.
If your concerns are for the poor dovi in the little tank, leave it there. If it don't sell they won't stock it." Rescuing "that poor creature is promoting it happening again.
If welfare of these larger cichlids is important to you, buy a tank of the correct size and order from people that are reputable.
The idea that, you can't afford a big tank so I will buy a big fish anyway is ridiculous. The hobby offers so much variety and choice that there is a fish for every size of tank.
Like I said before,I have always wanted an mbu puffer but I can't afford a tank big enough for its welfare.I don't just say,sod it I'll get one because I want one. That would be ridiculous and in my mind cruel.
The majority of people on here seem to agree that what you(LogiBear)want to do won't work.
Even Rd agrees with me,we have often not seen eye to eye on things. These are very experienced knowledgeable people,to not listen to what they are saying is a little ignorant.
If I am an extremist, then so be it,in my eyes there is nothing extreme in giving our cichlids the space they need and I can be comfortable with they way I treat these animals with regards to their requirements for space.

LogiBear. If you want an aggressive predatory cichlid to keep solo in a 75 why not get a male salvini. These are stunning looking fish when mature. They get to a decent size but won't dwarf your tank.
