At that size a flip of a coin is what you are looking at. Here is pic of my old Male. Notice the once distinct lines breaking as he approaches the 6 inch mark. He was also very bulky at even two inches, so I thought he might be a male.
(Also note in the first pic how ROUNDED the dorsal and anal fins look) Absolutely not an indicator of sex.

male. imo, because you ussally don't see females with a complextion that dark, and the fins

could be a coin flip though, it's hard with juvi's

To small to make a good guess i base all my suggestions of a fishes sex on coloration and body structer. For example a male jag is usualy twice as thick as a lady jag and has blueish green colors and the female is generaly smaller in ever way and has golden amber colors that are not as brilliant as a males it helps when there are a couple to compair. The only way to know for sure is sooner or later the lady will lay some eggs and the male won't.lol

What do you feed your jag?

Here is a more recent photo of my Jag. I feed him a variety of things including Tetra Min Flakes which is the only dry food he will eat. He absoutely will not eat pellets and I have tried everything. He also gets bloodworms, beefheart, worms, shrimp, krill and an occasional feeder!!!

My jag wouldn't take pellets at first either. It is very important that you get him/her on a good staple pellet. I find that a lot of times small pellets are very hard for juvie fish to break up and eat, so they will inhale it like they want to eat it, but they end up spitting it out. If this is the case, you could try HBH Supersoft w/Krill or w/Spirulina. It works great for a lot of my fish. Even my cats get it as a staple.

Btw, that fish is going to look great. If I had to make a guess right now, it would be male, but like I said, it could easily go either way. What size tank do you have for him?

Sage advice on the pellets, I have a female Jag that is a touch over a year i na community of cichlids and she doesn't do pellets, hence she just doesn't get fed that often and her growth rate is very slow. I have some recent juvies that were really stingy but finally have readily accepted NLS (garlic/anti-parasitic) pellets... By the way I've had a few Jags in my day (17 yrs experience) and I would say you have a male....
