Jags and Cons in Hawaii canals!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Haha. Don't doubt you and listen to the locals? I lived there for three years just up the road (off Punchbowl, I worked just off Ward Ave.) and fished the area non-stop for invasives. Unless they were put in there within the last year 95% of the fish in those canals are tilapia. Actually, damn it's been almost two years since I lived there.

As for listening to locals on what's in those canals, I ran into a guy fishing for an orange fish (which turned out to be an xanthic tilapia, which I caught) that he wanted to catch it to breed with his firemouth because that was how they created blood parrots. The vast majority of people in Hawaii don't give a damn about the freshwater ways, just the ocean, and they're mostly ignorant as hell as to what's in there.

Someone go get some photos. Or catch them.

hello, this is my first post on this forum! I'm from Hawaii and am one of the few who do pay attention to what is swimming in the local streams and canals. I can't supply you with any pictures, but I do know for a fact that Jags have been swimming around the Manoa watershed for about 20 years. I used to catch them when I was in highschool and have seen them in a couple places within the last year. They can be found in most waterways that empty into Ala Wai Canal, but I have never seen them above the university. Convicts can be found everywhere. Red Devil/ Midas cichlids can be found in Lake Wilson (as previously mentioned) The UH Quarry pond, Moanalua Gardens, and Ho'omaluhia reservoir. Also found in this reservoir and the drainage canals and streams around Hoomaluhia are Hemichromis elongatus, Nicrauaguan chiclids, and a few Melanochromis auratus. Before the Hemichromis got established, The reservoir looked like lake Malawi! Neon blue and yellow fish EVERYWHERE!!!

Another interesting find in Hawaiian waters not yet mentioned is a population of Corydoras aeneus in Manoa stream. They've been there for at least 30 years. There was also a population of Filamentosa barbs in Nuuanu stream up near the board of water supply pumping station, but reports say the population went extinct during a drought some years back.

I've seen those green terrors in the koi pond at UH... Was so tempted to take some as they are really nice. I don't think they made it to the stream yet.

On top of all these non natives that have established themselves here, theres always a few fish that get released by idiots. I have seen or caught the following here in Hawaii

silver arrowana
Koi
tinfoil barbs
bala sharks
boesmani rainbowfish
kribensis
angelfish
silver dollars
oscars

I saw the cories up by the Safeway in Manoa under the bridge on Woodlawn drive. Never tried to catch them. The terrors have made it into Manoa stream, I've seen several around the the bride on Dole street. Though it's way easier catching them out of the Japanese garden. (Go at night with a flashlight and dip net!).

The only jags I ever caught were in the quarry pond, and the largest of those was ~5". Seems they're getting out competed by the convicts, H. elongatus, and devil/midas'.

Any time I fished below the University all I caught were tilapia. Thousands of them. That and convicts.

Yeah, some barred mutt. Odds are lab X cit like most "red devils" or "midas'" out there. Seems about 5% of the devils are barred, I only ever caught one barred.

there are these ones near sun press. truest labiatus ive caught are from there.

and here are some convicts and tilapia i caught with spit in haleiwa joes

doesn't say much about your waters then!
they cant be slut fish because they keep to 1 partner at a time :D

well i have no pics, but im pretty sure they were full sized jags. I was running from palolo valley to the 24 hr fitness on Kapiolani and I stopped numerous times by the canals for I am out of shape and needed to rest. But Modest man was right, there were a butt load of tilapia. I also saw a 8" jag in a koi pond off waikiki strip near the food court another day. These introduced fish situation is not right but it's a central american cichlid keeper's dream. If only I could stash them on the plane with me.

its a rainy day in hell for me right now... i just got back from manoa stream right below the power plant at UH and i was there for almost 8 hours and did not catch ONE SINGLE GT... i only saw ONE in the whole stream but it wouldn't bite. kept on catching pink and stripped convicts... big ass guppies were also stealing bread from me...

im going back tomorow with my machete and every time i catch another blasted convict im going to sever their spines and throw them into the weeds for the feral cats!!

ah but the title refers to how often and with what ease they reproduce not their amount of partners and how nasty they are for their size

AND THE PRODIGIOUS WAY THAT WE FISH KEEPERS TRY TO PASS THEM OFF ON OTHER FISH KEEPERS lololololololol

Give me one pair of convicts and I could populate the fish community of saskatchewan in under a year ahhahahahahhahah
