JAGS BREEDING AGAIN.........

I try to feed them a few feeders but all they do is kill them....they dont think bout eatin for over a week...its been since the 17th and they just killed the 5 I put in there today.... so its 10 days so far.....

When they want them they will eat....just wait them out....
 
I checked on my jags yesterday and they were still guarding all the eggs. Things looked the same as they did Friday night when I left them. I tossed in a few small golden shiners and the male jag just gobbled them down quickly. The female wasn't interested in feeding.

I got into work this morning to see the rock almost completely cleared off of eggs. The female was sucking in the remaining eggs and dropping them into a pile of gravel behind another large rock. Not exactly what I was hoping for. I am not sure how many eggs are covered in the gravel pile and how many might have been eaten. The male is still actively protecting the area while the female swims around in wild circles. I tossed in a few more shiners, but the jags just mouthed them a few times and spit them out. The shinners were then used to feed my bluegill and yellow perch in another tank

Oh well, maybe a few of the eggs will hatch. If nothing pops up, at least it was interesting.

Well, this will cheer you up....They take the eggs off the slate when they are hatching....Odds are tehy all are hatching....so you sound see them swimming around with in the next few hours.... :thumbsup:
 
is there any way to tell them apart, males and females?
 
My jags are now proud parents of about roughly 200 - 225 fry. The eggs which were hidden behind a rock on top of a gravel pile since Sunday afternoon, finally hatched yesterday. I was amazed to see how many fry were hiding in the back of the tank. The female then decided to move the fry from the back of the tank to the side. She would suck in a mouth full at a time and then slowly spit them out into her desired area. It was pretty amazing to see her transporting fry for a few hours.

The jags kept busy keeping the wild kids in line today. A few of the fry appeared to have digested their yolk sack and began swimming up to see their parents. If they got too far away, the female jag would suck them in and spit them back down to the other fry still hanging in the gravel.

I decided to add a small amount of crushed flake food to the tank in hopes of getting the free swimming fry some grub. It appeared that a few fry were interested. I'll try feeding them again tomorrow. I just wanted to play it safe with the first feeding as I didn't want too much wasted food sitting in the gravel with the fry still feeding off their yolk sacks.
 
Sounds great...told you you didnt lose them all! When you put the crushed flakes in there, swirl the water so they sink faster.....they will eat off the bottom too, thats where they spend 90% of the time....alos brine shrimp would be a good then blood worms when they get a little bigger...... :thumbsup:
 
The school of fry have been tearing it up the last few days. They swarm all over the tank and gobble down the crushed flake food I have been feeding them. Their parents are still trying to control the school by using little power bursts along the sides of the tank. The wake or push of water keeps the fry in line. The only problem with this is that the fry get pushed to the edge of the glass/gravel. Some of the fry get pushed into the gaps in the gravel. They eventaully find their way out of the gravel maze.

They have grown a fair bit in the last few days. I have the water temp at 80 degrees. I fed them a bunch of times today. It was interesting to see the feeding at the surface and along the gravel and rocks.

How many times a day do you recommend feeding the jag fry? The fry are about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch in length.

Has anyone had success in feeding fry some frozen cubes of daphnia? I saw some frozen packs the other day and was interested if they would work out.

Thanks for any ideas or help.
