JAGS BREEDING AGAIN.........

I feed mine 3-4 times a day....
Mix of crushed cichlid flake, brine shrimp, and frozen blood worms.....

They newly hatched fry is @ 3/4-1" and the 7 weeks are 2" and they all eat like pigs....once the parents start to me mean or fight them for food it would be best to take them out so they dont become the food.... :thumbsup:

Congrats......expect many more batchs of fry...and a bunch of jags that you wont know what to do with!

Feeders for me....pet stores wont take but 10-20 at a time......and shipping cost too much for these cheap fish.....

Your pair of jags are breeding machines.

My fry are doing well for the most part. They are still eating the crushed flake food. I tried feeding them the frozen daphnia yesterday. It went over with mixed results. It appeared that some of the fry took to the daphnia. I had fun the other day when I saw that some of my fry were getting sucked into the filter pipe. I used a rubber band to attach a fine mesh net to the pipe to prevent more escape. I thought it worked, but a pile of fry managed to sneak in through the top of the net. The filter looked all clogged so I decided to check on it and clean it. I looked to see around 225 - 250 fry swimming around in the filter. There were only a handful of dead ones. I managed to set up a 10 gallon tank really fast and placed the fry in that tank. I now have a filter pad tied down to the pipe and that has worked better.

The small filter I have on the tank has been producing a little too much current for the fry. I plan on buying another 20 or 30 long today for the fry.

My pair of jags in the 40 breeder are still guarding the other half of the school of fry. The fry in that tank are doing well. It is amazing how many fry there were. My first estimate was way off. I have picked out a few dozen dead fry from the 10 gallon.

How many jag fry do you normally get from each spawn? What percentage of the fry die before they reach the 1" size?

Yeah, once you get them going they are like rabbits...keep the water and diet right expect it to happen every 3-4weeks.....

I get 400-600 eggs....1" 175-200...2" 125-150...then they are all feeder food for my Aro, and other cichlids....not worth tryin to trade a few in to LFS for a few bucks credit....

For me it's free feeders and apat on the back sayin im doing something right.... :thumbsup: :naughty:

What are you gonna do with all your fry outta curiousity?

Thanks for the info on the jag production numbers. I got into work today and found I pile of dead fry in the 10 gallon tank. I lost a bunch of them. It really sucked when the final count came in at 214. I managed to transfer the majority (about 130) of the stronger fry into a 20 gallon long. I treated the tank with some anti-fungus medicine in hopes of knocking down any fungal infections that most likely killed the other fry.

The fry that are still being watched by the jag pair are doing really well. The pair are still guarding the fry and I am going to try to keep them in that tank for as long as possible.

If I manage to get any survivors, I will hopefully raise them up to a decent size and try giving them to a few people I know. There are a few pet shops that I know of that sell jags. It would be nice to get some store credit out of a deal here or there. I guess I'll see what happens.

Riskistang - Do you power feed your jags for a few days and then switch up the water to get them to spawn again? I find it very interesting to hear how often your jags are getting busy.

I feed them the same amount...nothing other than adding missing water, and the weekly cleaning....

I feed them floating cichlid pellets, rosey feeders, and frozen blood worms.....
And they share the tank with the other fish listed in my signature....

From what I seen....it's harder to find a breeding pair than it is to breed them....

They take over the bottom right side of the tank under the large peace of slate, and the other fish get the other part above and left side of it.....Works for now 'til I get my 300 done and move them all around like I want.....

Well it will take @2 months of power feeding the fry from hatch to 1 1/2-2".....

Its almost not worth it....But would be cool to give them away to friends....
My Aro, ray's, and others like the "free" food......
