Jaguar Cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i think they are pretty healthy and happy they like to make more little jags than eat. when they are together they spawn constantly and half the time they eat their fry i dnt know why they get a good selection of food. i have had seperated them befor and they do eat better but there color is not as good and i dont think they like to be seperated so i dont know if the 125 will help i think they will keep spawning and eating less no matter what size tank thanks for the reply.

Jags are a blast and I love all the ones I have. My breeding pair cranks out a new batch of fry every month. The female is about 9 inches and the male is around 10 inches. I have had these fish for about a year and a half. The male was much smaller and got his butt handed too him by the female. I separated the two and managed to bulk up the male by feeding him a heavy diet of golden shinners while keeping the female on cichlid pellets.

I combined the two of them in 40 gallon breeder where they spawned out 4 times. I bumped the pair up to a 75 about 2.5 months ago. They love the larger tank and love raising hell every time I try to feed them and the fry they are guarding. I will eventually buy a larger tank and move them into a 125 or a 180 when I buy a house in the near future. Free space is at a premium with all of the tanks I have set up.

Aquamojo did a great job in describing the growth rates and genetics experienced with Jaguar cichlids. I can see the great differences in growth rates when looking at the tanks of fry and fingerling-sized jags I have set up. Some of my first batch of jags are up to 3 inches in length while a few of the little guys are about half that size. Jags grow like weeds when they discover that eating their little brothers and sisters is more exciting than flake food and blood worms.

Good luck with your jags.

as of now i dont plan on upgrading. bigger would be better, but after confirming it with at least one guy huge into cichlids (breeds jags), if done right the 75 will be good enough. i hope he will hit full potential of 18-20".

**stares at the two new baby jags she brought home today**

I just got in way over my head.....

And I'm excited!!
