Jags are very aggressive, territorial fish. They don't do well with most tank mates. They can grow fast and will become food aggressive. Its not fair to this type of fish to be in a tank under 150-180. These fish should live in a tank around 450 gallons and bigger. My 9" male Jag is tight in my 150Xh I am currently looking for a new home for him. It is just to hard to find tank mates that can handle this fish without buying a 10"+ fish. I like to keep multiple fish at a time and these fish are mean and extremely aggressive. Time for some Peacock Bass

They require very specific and very set standards. They might seem easy but they are extremely hard to build if you have no experience. If you want id build a small scale model of your tank and grow them out in there. Just so you know how it all works out. Good luck with you buy/build

Im going to do an acrylic tank so no need for woodwork experience otherwise this would not be a thought. theres a plastics place down the street from me that i can buy sheets of acrylic from and theyll cut it to my exact measurments so all i have to do is figure out what size all the panels need to be. then its just prepping the sides and then welding all the seams.

Maybe what I'll do is build the 55 gallon I'm going to house them in now so I now what it's going to be like for the 150 gallon like you said

450 gallons!?!? That seems a bit excessive for 2 fish but then again I'm new so I'll take whatever advice. I don't plan on keeping more then 1-2 jags and I don't want tank mates I just want a jag or 2. I plan on building a 150 gallon tank

you dont need 400 gallons bro. i have a breeding pair in a 225 community tank. tank mates include cuban pair, synspilum pair, loselli, oscar pair, bifa, and a vontehillo. no issues even when breeding. i wouldnt recommend letting them breed as it can become violent. once in breeding mode id recommend switching them out to another tank until they are done. another important note is make sure everyone has a territory, log, cave or whatever and when you aquascape break up direct lines of sight.
 
Personally I would go no less than 180, the 6x2 floorspace seems appropriate for such large fish. Anything smaller seems unfair. Plus, pairs can be pretty rough, so the extra room goes a long way. Though they are only small the last thing you want to do is stunt then. The sooner you can get a larger tank the better. Besides keeping params in check is easier on larger tanks.
 
I can vouch for jags being fast growers. I had a CA/SA tank going with an oscar, buttikoferi, texas, convict, jag and green terror listed from biggest to smallest. The jag and green terror were pretty much the same size but within 8 months the jag was bigger than the texas and giving the oscar and buttikoferi a run for their money! The GT didn't even grow so the jag was like 4 times bigger than him. You'll need a big tank fairly quick imo. You might be able to get away with a 125, however a 150 would probably suit these monster fish better.
 
I picked up a 50 gal in the mean time to grow them out I'm going to start setting up the tank so it can cycle the tank and I'm not getting the jags for another 3 weeks.

Im going to paint a few panels black so I can't see the wall behind the tank but I'm not sure what gravel to get. I was thinking a black gravel would look good but I read that sometimes it makes the jag to dark is that true? If so what do you guys recommend I use?
