I was wondering about the single fish for a tank thing, like a pet. which one would be better, more responsive, entertaining, easier to care for, to feed, etc.....
I was wondering, because I've owned jags, and dempseys, but I would like an individual fish in one tank. I know both get similarly sized, and aggressive. I also know jags need a much larger tank than jacks. I was just wondering about the differences if any, and anyones thoughts on them, thanx.

I have a Jaguar and used to have a Dempsey. My Dempsey was aggressive, but later became pretty docile. So docile I had to give him up because all the other fish were beating up on him. How about a Flowerhorn? How big of tank are you looking at?

A jag in my opinion is much better. I have a dempsey and I dont like him.

I think its personal preference as to which you think looks best.Any large cichlid kept singly as a pet is going to interact with you and be more interested in you and whats going on in the room than whats in his tank.

I think a jag would be a good choice, but get a fair bit larger than a JD

my dempsey always goes into hiding when i look closely at him. of course he is not at all kept by himself :)

My JD is my favorite fish. He's got more attitude than any fish I've ever seen and he sits there and watches me whenever I'm in the room. Comparing a JD to a Jag isn't really fair. They're two totally different fish. It's like comparing a Pinto to a monster truck. You like your Pinto, even if no one else does. It's fairly reliable, gets you from point A to point B, but it'll get smashed to Bejezzus and back by the Monster Truck.

harpogarza, I've seen it the other way. I purchased a 9" jack dempsey once cuz I felt bad for it, the lfs had it in a ten gallon. Anyways I just purchased my 65 g. and quickly set it up. An old high school pal of mine had a 90 g. with a male jag who was about a foot long. I told him I would rather my jack went to his tank, cuz i'd rather start with a juvi jack and raise him up. Well i delivered the jack to him, they just stared at each other locked up and the jack crushed this 12" jag into the corner. The jack showed the jag what was up, then backed off. The jag would'nt give up he kept mess'n with him, and the jd did it again. honestly I like jacks they just have better color , but jags are very vicious looking, something about those eyes.
