harpogarza, I've seen it the other way. I purchased a 9" jack dempsey once cuz I felt bad for it, the lfs had it in a ten gallon. Anyways I just purchased my 65 g. and quickly set it up. An old high school pal of mine had a 90 g. with a male jag who was about a foot long. I told him I would rather my jack went to his tank, cuz i'd rather start with a juvi jack and raise him up. Well i delivered the jack to him, they just stared at each other locked up and the jack crushed this 12" jag into the corner. The jack showed the jag what was up, then backed off. The jag would'nt give up he kept mess'n with him, and the jd did it again. honestly I like jacks they just have better color , but jags are very vicious looking, something about those eyes.

That is AWESOME! I love JDs. They're so underrated in the cichlid world. My Red Devil is a good 2" bigger than Jack, but Jack doesn't take no guff from him. I pity the fool who messes with a JD! :mr-t:

just recently my seemingly docile jack's have really bulked up in size and attitude. i keep 2 jd's with 4 oscars. my smallest o and the two jd's are always flaring up at each other. no damage done i think the o is just starting to move into his territory. they all still bow to Spike , my biggest mean as hell Oscar. they have awesome colors, the jd's...

I love it when you get a JD that doesn't like to hide and doesn't take crap from other fish....making use of it's capability....they have nice sets of teeth....some get a nice strong body with a narrow head like Jags too.

My little guy is like that! It goes nowhere near caves and is always dark. Just like my old one I had when I was 8 years old...always swimming about. Can't wait to grow this one up too.

Gotta love that. I recently added a juvi Flower Horn to my 125, mainly so Jack and my RD wouldn't go at it so much. The FH and Jack seem to have struck some sort of temporary alliance against the RD. I put caves in for Jack and the FH, but they aint going out like that. They stand their ground against the RD, despite him having the size advantage. When I had my 3 Tiger O's Jack rountinely whooped up on them until they learned not to mess with him. Don't mess f#!$ with a JD, son!

yea, I agree people have heard of jd's forever, I'ts very rare if you've ever heard of people knowing about jags. Jaguar cichlids are very nice, dont get me wrong, but I just dont think they are worth the trouble. Oneday, I would'nt mind having a jag again, i would like to at least have a 90 g. or a 120 g. to house him though. Flowerhorns n devils are nice too, but I really like the fast, streamlined looking cichlids the best. Flowerhorns, devils, n a few others almost remind me of discuss with an attitude. I think I'll go with a jd, great color, decent attitude, one nice fish. My 4-5" male is growing fast, with great color so far. would a 40 g. high be alright for him or should I go a bit bigger?

Personally, I don't think he'll dig the high tank. They do get close to 10". He should be alright in there for another year or so, but if you want him to be happy and studly get him a 55.

Thanx, HGarza. Do they make a 55 high? the reason I ask is bcuz I'm 6' 5" and I'd rather not squat so much to look at my fish. everyone has been so helpful, thank you. It seems there are some jd lovers out there after all, I thought everyone was pro-jag.

A 60 is a taller 55.

I am getting a 45 g. high tank n stand from a friend of mine tommorrow. I'm not sure the exact dimensions, I'll probly get it set up in like a month or so. I still have to get a filter, heater, gravel, etc. I think I'll have the top n light too. I'd like to have my jd in it with maybe some smaller species, convicts would be cool, but i fear there breeding activities might take up th entire tank, so maybe non-cichlid would be smarter, any suggestions? or just the jd alone?
