Jaguars aggression overrated?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Jags typically don't require the amount of territory, some other cichlids do. They are more of an ambush predator not typically a pursuit predator. Their aggression is therefore not displayed in the same way as what you typically associate with cichlid aggression, if their space is invaded they can be very quick and very aggressive.

Anazing jag OP! I agree on jag aggression or lack of. A lot of cichlids are coined "aggressive", but IME it comes down to individual fish and tank size.
I feel this way about salvini. People always say they are really aggressive and hide all the time. I've had 6 (4 female, 2 males), and not one was aggressive or hid all the time.

Except zonatus, they are always evil lol...

That's a good point. As long as I don't have bite sized tankmates, the aggression is usually limited to a chase.

i had a jag and got rid of him. it wasn't that he was violent, but he was just way more aggressive than the Vieja in the tank with him. He spent most of the day flaring up at every other fish, all day, every day, relentless.

It was a fight a day, and when he'd lose, he'd forget about it 2 hours later and go right back to flaring up at everything in the tank,. So, there was just no way he'd accept a role in the tank and live with it. Nah, all day long he was just flaring up, squaring off with all fish.

But he never hurt anybody, no fish ever died or anything, but it was just stressful to watch all day long.

That's just one fish, but, I don't think they're a very good match for a Vieja tank. Probably work out better with Amphs?

Could be the case. I rarely have Viejas. He's with an oscar, GT, JD, loiselli, and believe it or not, a dovii for now.

nice looking jag, my jags have always been mean territorial pissants, never been able to keep males with out a divider, females not so bad.

just took this vid during water changes, removed the divider to get a good vacuum. they do not care about the water change they care about being pissed off. these are my 2 F1 from my WC pair, almost a year old. raised from egg. male, and a female.

you want to have one of those in a tank with other fish? I would not, least not one of those 2. either way thats what a pissed off jag looks like.

Yep, that's the kinda behavior I experienced.

But, I gotta admit--looking at those 2, I wanna put one in an 180 in the living room. :)
