Jaguars, Umbees and Doviis, Oh my!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks, when trying something like this you start thinking people dont want it to work lol.
Although once the Umbee and Dovii are over 12" i will be setting up a 6x3 just incase theres any nasty business but hopefully it will work.
Do you think splitting the tank so the Umbee and Dovii wont be able to get at each over would be worth it?
Like a divide with a small hole that an 16" plus cichlid couldnt get through, that way if a smaller fish was chased it could pass through to the other side were the other large cichlid is.
....And just hope they are never both in a bad mood at the same time lol

If you split a 8' tank then the Dovii and Umbee would only have a 4x4' tank....they need a much larger tank for life. That would be small even for a "smaller Dovii or Umbee".

As some of you may know i am setting up an 8x4 tank dedicated to big Cichlids! All Fish going in are male and i will have backup tanks running for them, so if they cant stay in thell be put in there own tank with a female!
So for the question!
How do you guys think my tank will play out containing these:
Dovii
Umbee (male)
Jaguar (male)
Midas (male)
Festae
Texas
2 Oscars
Black Belt
Jack Dempsey
Frontosa (already bigger than the others)

Well the tanks getting setup in just under a month.
I have a 4x18x18 at the moment with a Midas, Jaguar, 2 Oscars, Texas, Dempsey and a Frontosa... all is well.

So please tell me your predictions please.
And no flaming i will have backup tanks running just incase!

:ROFL: all I have to say is good luck !! I'm sure it can be depending on tank size but I wouldn't recommend it with the species that you are looking to stock. I suppose it could all depend on size but I can tell you some of those species once they get big are not going to tolerate anything unless its a good swimmer and knows how to get the H--- out of the way

Well im hoping either the Dovii or the Umbee is going to play nice and ill end up with one true monster in that tank.
I am thinking of making the tank bigger maybe a 12x4 would ease things.

After alot of long thinking i have decided to only keep one of the two "monster" Cichlids.
So guys, wich do you think i should try my luck on?

I like the way Doviis body structure is so I would chose a male Dovii...also I have at least seen some Dovii in community tanks. If you get a pair your chances will be a lot less once they spawn. Not sure how long it would last with a Dovii maybe until he's 12" or even longer. Since my last post on this thread I saw that in the Chattanooga Tennessee aquarium they had 2 males and a female Dovii in a community tank with Midas Jags among other cichlids. I thought I saw you on that thread but if not here is a link to that video. Also the larger the tank the better chance of things working out. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v116/mackis60/?action=view&current=MVI_0789.flv
Here is the male Dovii in the 52K community tank and he is fully mature so to say it cant be done is not accurate.....maybe rare. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yM_1pXHGm-s
In this Video he says he is about 15" but I have seen another of his videos where the fish was currently 20+" and still in the tank. Look around on Youtube you will find it. Sorry about the long post.
