Jaguars, Umbees and Doviis, Oh my!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My 8' x 4' pond was not close to big enough for my old large dovii to have other fish in it with him. Some members here have had luck. I think it would just be a matter of time. Good luck

Hey thats cool thanks you have shown me hope!
Well the tanks going to be 8x4 and i have some of the Cichlids already, the Dovii would be added last, at a smaller size than my other Cichlids.
I think im giving myself as good a chance financialy as i can.
If everything goes wrong i have heard that Red Tail Catfish do very well with Doviis.

As some of you may know i am setting up an 8x4 tank dedicated to big Cichlids! All Fish going in are male and i will have backup tanks running for them, so if they cant stay in thell be put in there own tank with a female!
So for the question!
How do you guys think my tank will play out containing these:
Dovii
Umbee (male)
Jaguar (male)
Midas (male)
Festae
Texas
2 Oscars
Black Belt
Jack Dempsey
Frontosa (already bigger than the others)

Well the tanks getting setup in just under a month.
I have a 4x18x18 at the moment with a Midas, Jaguar, 2 Oscars, Texas, Dempsey and a Frontosa... all is well.

So please tell me your predictions please.
And no flaming i will have backup tanks running just incase!

Only way to know is to try but you will more than likely have problems with the dovii and umbee. The rest should be fine but it is always hit and miss with personalities. My tanks footprint is 9'x 4' and I have already pulled a dovii and blackbelt from my stocking because of aggression. Logic tells me I will probably end up doing the same with the umbee in the future. I have introduced it as the smallest fish in the tank so hopefully it gets used to tank mates before it is a powerhouse. The rest are doing fine and should continue to do so.

I always enjoy looking at the video of the 800 gal. The RT and Jags are nice. The rest of the videos you got are also pretty sweet. How big is the "sub adult Dovii" in the video looks pretty good. Do you still ahve him....do you know anything about him....F1 or what region he is from..Nig or Cost Rica?

He was an lfs pick up. He was about 14" at the time of that vid. I sold him last year as I am just running the 800g for now. He was about 16" when he left me.
I need to do a current vid of the 800. There has been considerable growth since that vid was shot.

Greenterra your tank is awesome!
You are the reason i got into cichlids, well your 800g!
Wich do you believe is least agressive would you say the Umbee?
Also does anybody know what a hybrid between the two would look like?
And would it be meaner?

Thanks. I have never kept an umbee of size before so I can't speak from personal experience. Personally, I wouldn't choose one over the other for aggression. Both ultimately are big hitters. As for a hybrid between the two. I hope I never see one. It would be a waste of two already perfect species IMO.:D

Looking forward to the new video greenterra I can just imagine how big those monsters are now ! =)

I cant wait to get this tank up and running, it may be a good idea to go with an Umbee then when it gets to a good size setup its own tank just incase he turns nasty! With a female in there.
