Most of the websites where flaming due to heavy stocking are mostly populated by keepers of small community tanks. Sure there are the few in the know, but most of their users never evolve past under gravel filters. And then, water changing advice is 10% every other week.

Most of the members here at MFK have evolved to a much higher level of fish keeping. Sumps, wet/dry's, and canisters are the norm here. Those of us with higher stocking densities typically are also the ones that own full range test kits and actually use them.

...I believe there is alot to be learnt from there methods but they will never share there knowlage if the first thing we do is knock them on how many fish they keep in one tank.:)

:iagree:

i feel the fish have a worse life with nothing to stimulate them in jap style tanks with no substrate no plants bogwood ect . the other fish must help but id still rather see the fish with something near there natural surroundings .

perfect water does not always mean a better life

Why would bogwood, plants and sand stimulate a fish? Alot have never seen their natural environment.
They interact with other fish and their owners.

true but i personly enjoy fish in a more natural looking tank but thats just me :)

I agree with Fraser just because a person lives in a crowded white walled square room their whole life does not mean they wouldn't enjoy living a real life if they were released or given stimulus.

lol bogwood and substrate is hardly stimulating. It may come into it's own to make the fish feel more secure by giving cover... but that's about it. I do enjoy the planted look too though, but appreciate both.

I agree with you for the most part, CHOMPERS. Although those microfishkepers don't fully understand monsters, I bet they do use their test kits

No kidding!

I hate when individuals compare fish to people in their arguments; there's just no credibility to what they're saying.

When I walk to the park to play basketball, I don't duck head first into the bushes at every loud sound or fast motion around me. I'd have a lot of scars if I did

the way i see it, we all keep 'fish' for different reasosn.
some purely like the fish, some the biotope, some the filtration system.
more offen than not, i think its a mixture of all the components.

maybe in japanese tanks, the emphasis is more heavily based on the fish.
thats it. in other tanks, we like our plants and substrate and decor and so are obliged to reduce our stocking levels.

the way i see it, if a fish in a japanese tank is healthier than a fish in a 'normal' tank, personally, i cant argue with that mehod of fishkeeping. period.

the only disadvantage being lack of reproductive potential and fitness - but that happens in 99.9 of our tanks.

just my 2 pence.
