You could look at it in two ways:
You think fish are living beings, and you care about them (like me)
Or, you consider them as "just pets".

People who really love their fish (I mean seriously love and feel for), will give their fish ample space. Others may stuff them in a bit more.

But a good example is seeing fish overcrowded in petstores, and that's for the store's convinience.

god

stop comparing fish to people!

people are people!

fish are fish damnit!!

To be fair, anything with a mind deserves some respect IMO. Just because it is below us in the food chain doesn't mean it has no right to decent living standards. To me, the fact that people are making excuses for it makes it seem somehow incorrect. I'm no PETA member, but to me some things just seem wrong. Sure I don't own a 1000g tank so my opinion is entirely invalid, but that's okay.

Well said.

the way i see it, we all keep 'fish' for different reasosn.
some purely like the fish, some the biotope, some the filtration system.
more offen than not, i think its a mixture of all the components.

maybe in japanese tanks, the emphasis is more heavily based on the fish.
thats it. in other tanks, we like our plants and substrate and decor and so are obliged to reduce our stocking levels.

the way i see it, if a fish in a japanese tank is healthier than a fish in a 'normal' tank, personally, i cant argue with that mehod of fishkeeping. period.

the only disadvantage being lack of reproductive potential and fitness - but that happens in 99.9 of our tanks.

just my 2 pence.

2 pence worth 2000 dollars!!

AGREED AGREED AGREED!!!!

I love my fish, thats why they are in a tank. So when I wake up in the morning I can greet them with a kind hello. I can feed them, and make sure that they eat their vegetables. Well okay so maybe Hikari Cichlid Staple isn't vegetables but it is green.

I don't know if my tank is going to be understocked, normal, overstocked, or japanese style. However I do know that I will care for these fish to the best of my ability. I have named each fish and know who's it is!

I will do my homework in front of my fish just so they know I'm hanging out with them. I think very few people knowingly hurt their fish for the sadistic pleasure of hurting a living creature. I could see why with a lack of space someone adamant about getting a fish that might not be exactly suited for that space still gets it.

Anyone can get a dog and lie about how far they take it on walks. No one can take pictures of their tank and say "but I take him to the swimming pool every morning and do laps with him"

HAve you taken that girl out, Vexter? Seems you need it, hanging out with fihshes, now..:) :) :)

Hey! I'm working on it!
She doesn't seem into Japanese style tanks though. However does feel the need to temp me with adding some new cichlids to my tank...But my tank is full! fully grown all my fish will total like ... 74" in a 125 gallon... sure i'll have like two fx5's by then... but still i mean like...
Fine - I should ask her out... after finals :P

No. Better wait till you're on your way to Professorship.. she 'll surely appreciate it.
And they wait, yes. They usually do. And if she even hasn't got a clue that you are entertaining the hypothesis of asking her out, say within the next 5 years, or so, she will wait even more...

Segway!
to quote the great Run DMC
"It goes a little something like this;
*funky beats commence*
It's tricky!"

Okay, so maybe its not. Maybe its a simple fact.

1) Japanese tanks are often overstocked, doesn't mean that they use it as an excuse to overstock just thats how it is.
2) down here some people may. I like a fish tank that has lots of fish. I want as many fish as I can have and still maintain a high level of living.

3)!!! So she won't wait doesn't mean that I won't try, i'll probably be heading down there this week. Wednesday! there. I put a date on it. This wednesday I'll walk in ask her to go to lunch. She doesn't want to go to lunch, I'll give her my phone number and invite her to a movie. She says she's dating a guy - I'll probably look for someone else.
