I have seen a few tanks lately that seem overcrowded, but when the owners are accused of this they say that the tank is not over crowded it is "Japanese Style". What exactly does this mean, cause to me, it just looks super crowded.

japanese style tanks are often criticized for their overstocking, but what everyone forgets is that they are MASSIVELY overfiltered and get large, regular water changes. Some japanese tanks have sumps that rival the size and capacity of the main tank. So despite there being a lot of fish, the water is pristine. Often much more than our regularly stocked tanks.

kinda like my 20 gallon nano with a 40 gallon sump ? lol

I did have it at one point, I like the way 20 gallon looks at the space that I have available, but since I was keeping a dwarf lion fish whose known to have a huge bioload, I added a 40 gallon sump underneath it...

It's not a "Japanese Style"... It's north Americans hearing an unknown language in a youtube video showing an overstocked tank. This goes to the very roots of culture of many countries in the orient (not just Japan). Cities are overpopulated and limited in space. Apartments are small and one fish tank might be all you can fit. So many fish keepers in Asia will bulk up their filtration and add in more fish. Many times it works, as you can see in many photos of MFK tanks even, but it makes for a bit more sensitive of a tank. A death in the tank could be enough for the filters to crash and the tank to die off in a toxic death.

In realitiy, this is a good way to keep cichlids like Africans.

Will, I edited your post so all of North America doesn't come after you with pitch forks and torches for name calling. ;)

And I read it in a book.

Kinda sounds like what Onion01 was saying, he just hadn't gotten into detail.

" In realitiy, this is a good way to keep cichlids like Africans" , If you went after "Japanese Style" like that, I can't wait to see who comes after this :ROFL:.

A book: One persons voice printed and bought by a publishing company.

As far as my post, I can't image how it could have offended anyone in it's original context. And if it did so be it.
