I think it has alot to do with Monster Fish Keeper books. While this style of tank can see in other countrys in asia, it was covered with many many examples(basically in 8 volumes almost all being basically this style tank) in these books which are from japan. Plus japan gets what are some of the top fish in the world. Perhaps that's why we think of it as more of a japan phenomina..
You were right about the rest, alot of it is because of space constraints. "African cichlids" is in no way applicable to this style tank though I don't think.
