Japes' Peaceful SA Display Tank Updates: April 1, 2009

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very nice pics and great looking tanks Japes!! The Heckelii can definately be a little aggressive. I have one male in my 220 and it dominates the other geo's and is pretty nippy. I can't imagine what it would try to do to another male.

I really like the look of the Laetacara dorsigera in with the orangeheads. I just added a dimmerus to my gymno tank that has sort of the same effect.

Your tanks look really nice!!

Works of art, your tanks are amazing looking. Great pic's btw gotta look amazing in person. THanks for sharing.

Beautiful tank and shots as always! Will have to steal some ideas and add small/colorful/schooling community fish to my 125 to go with the tapajos OHs and G. stergiosi colonies.

I'm curious - what makes you want to do a S. leucosticta tank? I personally love them...guess I just need more reasons :D.

And keep the pictures coming!

Thanks for the comments guys and girls, I'll try and get some more photos up over the next few days.

Where do you find these fish!?! (that is G.balanzii)

Around. You really need to be a member of local forums and do rounds of all the major fish stores to get your hands on some of the rarer species that manage to pop up over here. The Gymnogeophagus balzanii I had (only two) were shipped to Perth to a colony.

They're lovely fish, and they'll do well in a 4x2 footprint for life, as well as their small size letting me keep a pretty decent number of them. My A. heckelii were too aggressive for such a small footprint, a full sized adult colony of G. altifrons would be cramped in such a small tank, as would most of the other species that reach around 10"+. They need a few months under their belt to put on some size, but the the tank will fill hopefully fillout and eventually become a breeding colony.

I LOVE your setups, and Im not even a huge eartheater fan haha. Very nice tanks, and fish.

That wood thing in the 75 gal. is neat. What kind of ?tree? is it from or did you just find it randomly whilst searching a local river/lake forest kinda place? Like me haha :)

Thanks everyone, much appreciated.

It's purchased, I did the whole search around the local rivers thing a while back and don't really trust it - half the store bought wood isn't example aquarium safe either in my experience. It's a Mangrove root, quite common over here actually.

Few more photographs, Apistogramma agassizii mainly.

A. agassizii male. Was only picked up yesterday - nicest one they had at the store, but he was copping a bit of aggression in the small tank. Australian bred in Melbourne apparently. Not overly impressed with the majority of them, and this male is a replacement to another I purchased that ended up having a deformed mouth.

Possible male. Approximately 3cm TL.

Female, have another definite female as well but they tend to lurk around the back.

Another S. leucosticta shot to finish.

I wish I could get some mangrove roots, but you know the tree doesnt really thrive here for some reason.
