Interesting you found the heckelii to be so aggresive, my two males still get on really well at about 6". There is the occasional squabble, but nothing serious.

What length tank David? I just found 4 foot to not provide enough territory for a dominant male and anything else.

Amazing pictures/fish/tanks, as always. Do you collect your own driftwood, or did you buy it somewhere?

Footprint is 150x70cm, although with these two I don't think it matters as they spend a lot of time together, its not like they keep to separate ends of the tank and fight when ever they meet. I guess different fish will have different personalities. Did you have any females with your group, perhaps that encouraged more aggressive behavior?

Mine initially snapped after I removed a few 4-5" Orange Heads and they didn't have their aggression spread.

You may find that extra foot is making all the difference. My dominant male was very on and off but it seemed as though after his first big initial anger burst, the three smaller fish new that he had the potential to do more than just a quick burst of chasing, and panicked whenever it happened.

Probably didn't help that I had two courting, either. They were about 18 months old too, which isn't old enough to breed apparently - however I guess aquarium strains differ to wild information.
