Jauguar cichlid and a Piranha

Hey guys, I'm actually new to this forum. I've been just skimming through a lot of these discussions, and I'm glad to be a member. I have a piranha tank and I also have a south american cichlid tank. Through my experience I must say in your particular situation, I really dont see one killing the other, unless space becomes an issue, or even hunger. But as the jaguar cichlid matures, the piranha will definately start having problems, becuase the jag becomes more territorial, and they usually live in solitude. But if they grow with each other for a great time period their might be a chance the piranha will survive. If the two as you said are doing fine now, the jag should have no problems in the future, becuase its growth rate and aggresion is greater than the pirahnas. I've had cichlids mixed with pirahnas in a tank before during my earlier years as a hobbyists and they all did perfectly fine; but I don't recommend it. If you have someone who can by the jag, then sell it, because it seems like you want a few pirhanas in your tank anyways.

very interesting topic.. i happen to have both RBP and pair of Jag Cichlids.. and i can tell you guys that.. those jags will eat anything that fits in its mouth as soon as you drop it into the water.

hey all thanks for the info. i just sold my jag back to my LFS and bought a juvenile RBP that is in a tank of it's own untill it is large enough to go in with my bigger guy. i think a few months and he should be big enough. the jag i had was also a pig he would put 3 feeders in his mouth at a time. (funny **** when you see 3 little mouths opening and closing inside a mouth...

Keeping RBP in pairs is also a disaster waitng to happen.

I think you made a wise choice by returning the jag. Derick has a point though if its true that you have two piranhas in the 75g. I dont know the sizes of your rbp's but you should have about 4-6 of them in there. No more no less.

Why no more?

I disagree with the 2 rbp's being a problem they are a bit more agresive just give them lots of nice places to hide and some distractions (20 or so tetras) and they play all day
this is only what I have seen in the 2 months that i have raised them

RBPs are a schooling fish, why on earth would you keep as a pair. Two months is a very short time to draw a conclusion on whether a pair will work. Why not state size of fish and tank also? It is very unlikely anyone would have success keeping two adult or sub adult RBPs.

chiclids will own.....ya right my convict at 4" was basically disected in about 5 min of ownership from my 6" black pirhana........really it's only a matter of time no matter what it is. That also includes a 5" blue lobster...gone!!!
