Ok, here's the 10g im working on. Going for low-budget/low-tech on this one. Might dose with Excel, but other than that, there will be nothing fancy with this.

I didn't even buy a stand, just use an old audio tower i had laying around. Lighting comes from a 27w desk lamp that uses a four-tube CFL bulb in 6500k. Got it at home depot for $19.99.

Substrate is one bag of Flourite original. The white rock wont be in there. I'm gonna be putting a lot of driftwood in here. As soon as i get the driftwood, i'll start planting this thing.

Plants: I plan on using Anubias Nana, Java Fern, and Java Moss. trying to stick with easy and non-demanding plants.

Filtration, im gonna use a HOB filter i have on my 210 that i dont really need.

So, what do you guys think?

You beat me to it :O
lol, to what? you were gonna do a planted 10g too? :)

thanks man. i was actually gonna start taking off the rim, but after seeing how thin the glass was, i decided to keep it on. the glass on these walmart tanks looks sooooo thin that im afraid the slightest impact will crack it.

any other plants you think would work? also, about these anubias, ferns and mosses - i always see that people tie them to rocks or driftwood. can they simply be planted in the substrate or do they do better when tied to something?

I don't think you're supposed to bury the rhizome of the ferns, but I could be wrong, I'm sure someone else will be along the chime in on that. You could do my little moss trick to plant it in the substrate, I don't think it would root if you just stuck the moss in the substrate.

yeah i thought i read somewhere that you shouldnt bury them, but i wanted to double check first. that means im gonna need a lot of driftwood. yeah, i might try that with the moss. can you bury that plastic mesh just below the substrate? do you think the moss would reach the surface?

I'll post some pictures tonight of mine, it's growing fast and will soon be ready to be buried in the substrate. I think it should grow, I'll be able to let you know soon for sure though. You may need to start it above for a little while.

cool, id love to see how its coming. hey, do you have a thread on your 40? what equipment are you running? co2? not sure if youve mentioned it before, but i wanted to see if there's any plants that youre using that might work for my 10g

Nothing running on the 40, just dosing excel, having SERIOUS algae issues right now though.

You should look at the Philippine ferns for this tank, I think they stay a little smaller than the java's and have the same requirements.
