I'm getting a 29gal setup on sunday, possibly might have to wait till next weekend. Its coming with a crap ton of Convict Cichlids and I plan on selling them to LFS asap because they are only 1 inch long but it will soon be WAY to much for that gal setup. I might keep 3 or 4 for now till they get bigger.
But to the point. Can Jack Dempseys and Cichlids be in the same tank? I know this is kinda stupid question but I don't want them eventually killing each other while I save up to get a 150gal custom setup. I've dealt with both of these fish before but never in the same tank. The JD's are also maybe an inch longer.
I just wondered if they would get along.

thanks for your help to those who reply. I really do know its a stupid question but I had a friend who did this and they went into a face off and the JD killed the Cichlid but the JD eventually died 3 days later. lol

this is what u can have in a 29.
firemouth, rainbow cichlid or some type of Convict cichlid.

but I was going to try and find a Jack Dempsey but I read that they will kill each other if one pair is mated and have fry. and I don't want that later on down the road. I called my LFS and they said they would give me 5 bucks for each convict I give them and I'm getting like 30 because this guy has over 300. But I think I'm just gonna get some Jack Dempseys because they are just SOO gorgeous (:

Yeah, I wouldnt get the Jack until at least a 55 is set up. IME, Cons got way too aggressive in my 80gal and would pester the JD. This probably would have lessened if I had all males. If you have multiple convicts they probably will breed and kill the jack. A male jack and male con might have trouble getting along in a 29gal. All depends on personal temperment.

Chances are your LFS wont buy convicts, you will be lucky if they will take them for free.

dont put a jack in a 29 gallon even for just growing out i use 29 gallons for breeding small cichlids under 5in jacks grow mighty fast and get aggressive fast. not a good idea

The 29gal is ONLY a temp till I get my bigger tank. Maybe a few months at the most and they are only an inch big. I plan on getting rid of the cichlids, there will be WAY to many that I'm getting and I don't even know what to really do with them. I don't care if my LFS wont give me money. I'm getting them for free, so I don't really expect money out of them. I have two perfect JD's picked out. like I said, only about an inch big. I asked a local fish expert and they said it should be fine for a few months but no more then that, especially when they get to about 2-3 inches. They will def have to be moved to a bigger tank. Which is understandable

(I'm watching my ghost shrimp go crazy at the top of this 10gal I have on my dresser.. hahaha)

discus-dude, I live in southern Indiana near Kentucky and Illinois. if you want some let me know. I'm still not quite sure how many this dude is giving me.

They are white and zebra convict cichlids.

I'm also not getting the jacks until these are gone for the fear of them killing each other if some of them are paired and start breeding. Not what I need. lol
