JD & Convict Cichlid question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hold off a little longer for the 55 then. If you can hold off until the convicts are gone, hold off a few months.

It's only few months at the most right. We all have done the " I will upgrade later" but normally something comes up.

Also, I am not a cichlid keeper, but wouldn't a jack need something larger than a 55?
They get like what 6-10 inches? A 55 and a 29 are only 12 3/4 inches wide or something like that. Wouldn't you want something at least 16 for more space for turning? (or larger) Especially if you are getting more than one...

No I keep a full grown Jack Dempsey in a 55 with his female they make good breeders but there's zero room for another cichlid.

Not saying they won't fit in. But I am a bala shark keeper. I would not put a fish that is 10 inches in a 55. Kinda mean

I would never go any smaller than 75G for an adult pair of JDs . . .

if the JDs are medium-sized - - 8" or less - - than a 55G is suitable, but larger than that and I think it's too cramped because of the only 12" width . . .

well honeslty my Male doesnt care at all. hes feed very well with daily water changes, his female has a single small flower poy with a rosk in front of it where she can hide away from him. Hes got plenty of room becuase i dont over stock the tank with decor. Its very common to keep a full grown pair in a 55. ive never kept Bala Sharks to a large size only like 7in then sold them they grow fast, but are a very cool fish! komodo you dont happen to have any photos of yours on here? :D

My 55 gallon is around 14 something its a petsmart outa the box tank lol. my male doesnt have problems turnning around and darts back and forth trough the tank all day with ease.

Ok I'll se if I can find them trough your profile haha sorry i love looking at other peoples tanks.

but I was going to try and find a Jack Dempsey but I read that they will kill each other if one pair is mated and have fry. and I don't want that later on down the road. I called my LFS and they said they would give me 5 bucks for each convict I give them and I'm getting like 30 because this guy has over 300. But I think I'm just gonna get some Jack Dempseys because they are just SOO gorgeous (:

$5 per convict? I'm moving to indiana and going into business!! I'll be a millionaire in no time! My local LFS had trouble hiding their unhappy feelings when i brought them a dozen convicts. i got a SMALL bag of hikari out of the deal. I think I saw one of the same convicts still there, a year later.

I didn't know a convict sold for $5, much less a lfs paying that.

oh, and I would say you could keep two female JDs in a 55. no males, no pairs.
