JD in a 46gal bow front?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I owned a 11 incher and he was a few years old when i got him and it took a few more years to get 11 inches. They usually top out at 8-10 inches. From the pic i would say male and very stressed. By the looks of him he may have trouble hitting the 10 inch mark. The 46 will be fine for a a few years. I would keep him alone because he looks like he's been through alot. Awesome fish tho

Fantastic, just be sure to offer beefheart sparingly because it's not very nutritious. I'm sure that JD is in absolute heaven now that it has a good home. I'm glad you rescued it. :)

(Notice how I keep calling the JD "it"-- still can't figure out gender!!)

Yeah, "it"s def easier than the "he/she" rant I went on in my previous post :)

I'm pretty sure it's a male. Enough that if we were taking bets, I would feel comfortable putting everything in my wallet right now down on it (although currently that isn't saying much). As far as the 46gal bow front goes, it is a little small for that fish. However, the fact that your on here doing research and trying as hard as you are to clean up your friends tank makes me think that you wont slack w/ this fish and the tank. Because of this, I'd say to keep it. Although he may not be living in a mansion, his house will be clean and there will be food on the table.

The rescue happened sooner than expected. The red devil was picking on the JD so bad that it started swimming on it's side at the top of the tank. I had no choice but to put it in the 46 bow with only two weeks into the cycle:cry:. I was able to get some seeded material from the original tank to help speed things along. I have no choice but to put my faith into Seachems Prime and Stability along with daily 30% water changes till everything stabilizes.

looks male to me. Good for you for recueing him. Good Luck

Two weeks isn't so bad for a cichlid really. I've done emergency moves in a much shorter amount of time, and they made it. How is your baby doing now? I use Tetra Safe Start whenever I'm starting a tank, and that seems to help.

Water is reading .25 ammonia 0 nitrite 10 nitrate. The prime must really help with the ammonia because he seems to be real calm exploring his new home.

def. a male. Just in bad shape...

And yes, Prime does detoxify Ammonia very efficiently. It needs to, because all the Chloramine in your tap water is reduced to non-toxic chloride ions + ammonia, so it would kill your fish instead of conditioning the water.
