JD sex?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Moloch,
You have a male. Weight in the chest, and the spangles.
As he grows the pearls will grow on his back end. He is still young.

Well thats cool, every time I refer to it I end up calling it he/him/his/what-have-you, so at least I can stop going through and correcting all my posts to the female form:p

I was told otherwise last time I posted in the cichlid section because of the blue on the lower gill plate (just forward of the fin)

Did you take a picture of my fish? I can't tell either.

Moloch, I agree with Fishing_Out that you have a male

Guapoako, yours is a little young to tell imo

There are alot of factors involved in sexing these guys. IMO they are the easiest to sex, for me anyway. There are distinct variables in the pearls that are key indicators. I dont rely on the gill plate method.
Guap- You got a female. HIGHLY stressed out too.

I was wondering if the same factors apply to EBJDs.... Mine is at the 3" mark now too. What is he/she/it?

All pics of the same fish by the way. Sorry for the bad shots. These are the best ones I have for now.

My vote goes to female based on what I've been told (Blue spangling on the lower gill plate is pretty visible in that pic)

I'm still torn on what the sex of mine is :p

From this pic it looks female, but in person I always get myself questioning it because I don't see much blue past a certain line on the body.

Female. Males will not have the spangling on the lower rear portion of the gill plate. "Pearls, spangles, and weight" have nothing to do with sexing JD's.

The same sexing rules do not apply for EBJD's.

Modest, you are absolutely wrong. Anomalies like that occur frequantly. Pearls, Weight, and structor has everything to do with sexing, Maybe not if you dont have much experience with JD.
A quick google search will tell you that.

I see male in that picture,

I use the gill plate and anal fin shape.
