The problem is that you have 2 fish in there and the JD wants the territory. Put 5 or so bigger cichlids than the JD in there and it will stop. Then, as they grow, remove the problem fish or the ones that are getting too big or upsize the tank and keep them all.
this is also true, when i had the cubans and GT pair in my big tank my JD never bothered a single fish because he knew his place, but after i removed then he went crazy for like 1 week until a new order had been established and some of the other fish finally stood up for themselves and put him back in his place

ya try some neets, those are some aggressive little buggers. also texas or something semi aggressive, not like red devil or anything because it could kill your jack(mine would have at 3"). Just keep up on waterchanges and you should be fine. but make sure you get them around the same time and size

As long as you have adequate filtration, Cubans, Convicts, Neets, Carpintis, female Cyanno or something along those lines that is tenacious, will stand its ground and wont outgrow the tank will work. Firemouths arent, IME, that aggressive (neither are any JDs Ive had either). Just keep in mind my suggestion isnt for the tank for life. You will eventually need to upgrade or remove several of the fish as they get bigger.

If you need help with all this, go see Adam @ Fish World in Raleigh. He can solve the problem for you with ease...and if they dont have any of the aforementioned fish I suggested, PM me. I have several between 2-5 inches that Id sell you...or maybe give you.

I plan to upgrade to a larger tank eventually, maybe a 125 gal. I really never thought about getting a decent group of juve cichlids, letting them grow and sort out the agression issues, then keep a few that do well together. I may give it a shot.

I was actually in Fish World yesterday looking at their selection. It was mostly JD's, a small GT, and a group of small Cons. There may have been others that I did not recognize but nothing of any size.

Hmm, I was in there about 2 weeks ago and there were a lot more cichlids than that. I didnt realize they sold that many. Well, like I said, if youre interested in others, PM me and Ill let you know all of what I have that Id be willing to part with. Im not too far from you.

Well they had some a Jag, a False RT, a Flowerhorn, and maybe a couple of others, and lots of African cichlids. I am very new to cichlids and the hobby in general so I am still learning all of the varieties. They had a few rows of empty tanks, so maybe that is where they usually keep them.

Fish World is only 7 miles from my house, but it was only my second trip up there, well third if you count the first failed attempt that resulted in wrecking my car. I did pick up a nice piece of driftwood yesterday. The next time I go I will ask for more info on what they have.

I also checked out Aquarium Outfitters in Wake Forest, they are about 12 miles from Fish World up US-1. He had a nice selection of cichlids and a few monsters, like a 3' RTC, a 2' RTC, and a few others.

Wrecked your car? :wall: Man, that sucks. Sorry to hear that.

Thanks for the heads up. I wasnt aware there was another shop that close that carried cichlids.
