JD super aggressive

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Now I'm convinced my JD is unsuitable for tankmates. I picked up a Convict that is the same length as the JD but much thicker and taller...well the JD now has 2 cichlids to chase. He has been chasing the FM and the Con nonstop for the past 20 minutes. I do not know what to do with this JD. I do not want to separate the tank again but he will not leave them alone.

I also picked up some black 3m colorquartz today, so maybe I will change out some of my gravel and rearrange the tank a little to throw the JD off. I plan to do the gravel to colorquartz change in sections to prevent starting my cycle over.

most of your bacteria is in your filters, hardly any is in your gravel so i doubt it would mess with your water chemistry that much to just change it out, and besides it will be a PIA to try and separate the gravel from the sand if you have both in there, i would just totally take out the gravel n add sand all at once (just make sure to wash it REALLY GOOD) also make sure to gravel vac really well before stirring it all up, n did you move deco around when you added the con? i would give them a little longer to sort things out and they should calm down in a bit especially if the con is bigger than the JD, once he has had enough and settled in more im sure he will most likely dominate that JD

I'm going to do the gravel change out tomorrow. I actually have 2 new AC70's coming in tomorrow as well. I will probably do the gravel to colorquartz change, wait a week or so, change the old 30-60 hob for a AC70, then wait a week or 2 and change the other.

I am going to change the caves around again, but its a real pain to get these rocks to stay situated. I guess this hobby is all about patience and trying out fish/tank setups until you get it just right, then starting all over.

If you have enough outlets i would just hook up the new filters and either leave them running along side the old ones for 2 weeks or just move all the media over to the new filters GOOD LUCK and make sure to post some pics when your done redecorating

The JD is actively hunting the FM. He was staying down on one end in his cave but that changed. I hope the FM does not get over stressed, I'd really like to keep him.

I rearanged the driftwood during my water change earlier and formed a new cave. Maybe this will help but I think the JD is just mean.
fish aren't really "mean" it's just a tough cichlid being a tough cichlid, just the way nature intended. its the reason we love them, but its also what can make them difficult to keep, particularly in communities. in a 55 your best bet would be to keep the jd with a couple of small plecos and call it a day.

I have enough outlets but not enough space on the back of the tank for all of the filters. The current filters take up most of the back of the tank.

I will take some pics tomorrow after the colorquartz is in.
