JD'S or GT's

lol yeah i def vote GTs over JDs, much better personality IMO, but just be aware to be very picky when choosing your juvies, I have actually given up on GTs from the chainstores just because i have had nothing but bad luck with them and they got the mysterious stringy white poo that couldnt be cured if i didnt feed them a 90% veggie diet with frozen peas and what not. many people on here have had great luck with GTs im just saying my experience, i love this fish but unfortunately just gave up after several ended up wasting away in the same way. JD are def more durable/hardy but GT are the cooler cichlid, and your more likely to get an outgoing GT than JD (i have had both shy and outgoing versions of both though...)

is there anything in specific i should look for when i'm pickin out my juvies, like marking or colours to tell the sex? or is it tough to tell when they are young? i know they are much easier to tell the sex apart when they mature.

I agree and disagree with some of what has been said haha Where is the JD love!? Ive housed both fish, never bred them but in my experience, green terrors much like any other fish vary greatly when it comes to personality, i had one that was super shy so i traded it and bought another one, a male that was extremely outgoing and would greet me at the front of the tank and jump for food and everything you could ask for in a fish haha but with that said, I do think that is is very true that Green Terrors are a much more delicate fish in terms of water quality, stress...ect Mine ended up dying from that wasting away disease crap, didnt respond to any meds i tried, i was pretty pissed. anyways, now i have a big beautiful male JD and he is a little more timid, but will still jump out of the water for food, he is fiesty, digs a TON, and loves his food. I also think that the jacks are much more hardy individuals. With all that being said with the pros and cons of both fish i really dont think you can go wrong with a quality individual of either species, but its up to you, and what is your favorite color haha good luck man

This might be the preferred source for Gold Saums & true Green Terrors: http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/ Scroll down a bit.

The question "What is the hardiest cichlid?" is an important one. Medicating a tank gets old. (And seriously, how often does it do any good?) I would add to klnt's observations about the sensitivity of GTs that Oscars, too, are prone to a range of health issues, a bacterial pitting ailment (John Satisfaction Syndrome) being the hardest to treat. I went with a JD partly because of their reputation for hardiness. That they're one of the most stunning fish, reef or freshwater, goes without saying.
