Jelly Bean or "Painted" BP?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks much, ~T~!!how big will she get? My fiance wants to get other cichlids, and I'm wanting to know if she can be housed with them at any point in the future? Should we just go with smaller cichlids, and she can be a part of that community? Or should she just stay by herself?

If its a defo a female your looking at about 3" max as female cons dont grow as large as males anyway but the fact its aready short bodied and dyed to boot is not going to do much for its growth potential.Saying that its still a convict so can probably be housed with larger aggressive cichlids.Just nothing too big.But also nothing to small or delicate as she will most likely pick on them. What other fish were you considering and what size is the tank?

let's see.... 30 or 75 gallons(most likely 75), and we wanted other convicts, and a firemouth, my fiance wants some cockatoos and a salvini. I was hoping to eventually get some severums, but not with convicts, I don't think.

She has grown 1/2" or so since we got her...I'm hoping for a little more growth out of her...and I have no clue if she's really a female or not. I can't tell....

It would go fine with other cons and firmouths, severums will be fine too (I have kept them with the fish you mention)although salvinis might be a little too aggressive and cockatoos are tiny dwarf cichlids that wouldnt last 5 minutes.

Btw females have a copper/orange belly area.

so Salvini's are too mean, and cockatoos are too delicate? but I can keep her with Severums (want golds) and firemouths?

She's being shy right now, and is peeking out of her sunken ship at me, so I can't see the belly. will the color show on a 2 inch long fish?

Yup they should be fine but you can never tell the temperament of each fish.

Yes the colour will show, it should look like this.

Alright thanks!! ^_^

So she is a pink convict then...can she close her mouth?? lol BP's can't close thier mouths.

Anyway, I would think that she would do fine with firemouths and sevs. Still got some nice ones down here at an LFS:naughty: Did you sell the CK this weekend then??

Actually many can, my KK has left me bleeding several times and my big BP has no problem nipping me and moving huge piles of gravel. Short body pink cons usually have normal mouths although I have seen even normal full sized cons with the mouth deformity.

Thanks T.
All of them I have seen can't close their mouths...I actually feel kinda bad for them...It's funny how certain hybrids are so accepted in the fish world, and some peopl think other hybrids should be destroyed...like flowerhorns and BP's are accepted and some even sought after....while certain cichlids will breed together and people think they should be destroyed before they can breed again...then again, aren't BP's sterile?? Maybe they just don't want hyrid cichlids taking over all of the purebreds while BP's cannot breed anyway so there are no worries about it.
