my comment was only in regards to what I've seen and/or read in regards to the situation most illegal aliens are in...I never said there aren't any successful cases, as there are bound to be considering the total number of people that fall under that definition, but it still would be a small percentage of the overall number of illegal aliens that have been particularly successful...in many places, such as as FL they won't issue a FL ID or DL without a permanent resident card or employment authorization card.

i wasn't try to offend you or anything like that

Good point good point. The percentage of success stories in regard to the topic (high school drop outs, immigrants) is small considering the amount of people involved.

I think some can get by without it, but ballinouttacnrol is right in this situation. Everyone is different, but he needs to open as many doors as possible. Get that GED.

I think joining the army or armed forces would be a great learning experience for you LBF, you could learn a lot from there. If I was in your situation I would shoot for the airforce, and if you can't get in there go for the army.

These days you need a GED or HS Diploma to get into the military - especially the air force. I dont know what the current standards for the Marine Corps recruiting is but it used to be if you didnt have a diploma you needed to have a GED AND some college credit. Gone are the days of mindless trigger pullers filling the masses of canon fodder. The modern military is far too complex to man with people who arent willing to learn. Even as a grunt, field craft, tactics and weapons systems must be learned. It also speaks to drive. Certainly there are plenty of people out there without a GED or diploma who are intelligent, but uncle sam is not going to just take your word for it.

On the flip side of the coin, I know several people with neither who are intelligent and successful. I wont go so far as to say you need the GED or diploma - but it sure will make success easier.

Cant believe there is a debate on getting by with or without a GED...I dont know where you guys are from, but in Michigan (one of the worst economies) if you dont have a GED or HS diploma you are automatically out of the running for the job. Over qualified people are applying for jobs because they are out of work. In the real business world, even a Bachelors degree is becoming obsolete...now Masters are much more preferred.

Kid get your GED...its an accomplishment in and of itself.

I completely agree with Jagd, now a days there are a lot of people with even multiple degrees who are working jobs that can be handled by people straight out of high school coz theres just nothing out there atm...

So unless you seriously start to better yourself now, your going to find it a lot harder later on down the line unless you get extremely lucky or get paid next to nothing...

Either way, i still wish you the best of luck to hopefully find something that will work for you...

Another idea. Do you have a ManPower company in your area? When I was a kid, I moved to Olympia, Washington and had trouble finding work. I applied at ManPower and did odd jobs until one day I was painting at a factory called Dart Containers. It was a job that took a few days and every day I kept bugging the GM for a permanent job. He ended up hiring me to be a machine operator and then I moved up to printing. Well, the point is that ManPower might help you find a job. I kept doing odd jobs with ManPower on the weekends and then ened up with a part time weekend job at Fred Meyers....check them out, they helped me a lot in my time of need. When working as a temp, be honest and work your butt off to prove yourself.

Still, like I said in my previous post, keep living with your grandparents and put of with it until you get your GED. That will be for the best in the long run. GL Convict_Breeder....oops I mean LFB.

this is what's known as a short term life plan. sounds good, keep it rolling buddy.

I've done plenty of hiring in my career... Persistence, flexibility and desire mean a lot. The guy that takes the first "no" for an answer probably not the guy I want on my team.

Keep at it LBF... and check back on the places you've already applied...and ask if they have any new openings....

Matt, when you start doing hiring, please come share your experience. I was sharing first hand experience.

Trust me, if there's someone i want to hire, i'll get in contact with them. If i've written you off, nothing will change my mind. plus, if you're in a hiring period, you're hiring to fill a need. Chances are that need has been filled, hence why they're not calling him. Most people are taught to trust your intuition when it comes to hiring, not to be pursuaded by silly stuff such as "Omg, they showed up early", personal references or how often they call.

I can see if this were a skill based craft, that approach might work where there's limited qualifyed applicants, but not entry level at a grocery store.
