Might get flamed, but just being honest. I think a lot of you guys giving advice are not completely being honest with LBF. You guys are treating him with white gloves with ever response. I think a lot of people reading this are going to agree with me.

Who in their right mind will hire and vouch for 20 years old without high school diploma, not even trying to get GED, and with no job experience of any kind. Big companies and corporations are not going to hire people without at least a GED. If I’m small business owner I might consider him – even which is a long shot. Even the military will not accept people without GED. Get your GED and your chance of finding job will greatly increase. Driving semi truck, wielding, plumber, or any type of hands on job will require schooling or apprenticeship

The first minute of interview, the interviewer will know if s/he will hire the interviewee. If I was doing the interview and I sit down and I’m looking at the job app:

High School or GED – did not graduate and not enrolled currently for GED.

Work experience – None.

Interviewer – You are 20 years old and never had a job and currently not enrolled to earn your GED, what have you been doing for money? What have you been doing?

LBF – uh………. learning to bend elements.
____________

When you hire someone... it means you are vouching for the person. That is your reputation on the line. No one is going to hire LBF unless they are forced to.

The best thing for LBF is EARNING his GED. I’m sure a lot of people might not agree with me, but YOU NEED YOUR GED. I hope he gets lukcy and do find job though.

Graduating from high school or getting your GED shows EVERY employer that you have at least basic understanding of Math, English, Writing, and Basic Comprehension. If you do not have GED… it shows the employer that you do not have basic understanding of math, english, writing, and basic comprehension. I know I will not hire anyone without a GED. Unless you are referred to me by really close friend, there is no chance you will get hire by me.

pURPLEcHILLIrED123, i agree.

But contrary to what you are saying...the PETCO i worked at part time in college would hire the lowest of the low (not saying you are LBF). Some shady employees rotated through there in the few years i was there. They just needed bodies to fill the schedule.

I don't disagree that everyone should atleast get a high school diploma or GED, i'm just sharing my knowledge of the work force and my own personal experience doing interviews (I doubt Jcpenney's qualifyes as a small business?) Short and simple, you CAN get somewhere without completing HS.

I also mentioned that illegal immigrants are able to successfully earn a living for themselves and their family here also...without citizenship, high school diploma or a GED. All jobs will list what qualifications are needed to be hired and if it's not covered in the application, it'll work it's way into the interview. Just saying all hope is not lost

I'm not trying to say life is like the guy who supposebly started off with a cell phone on craigslist and ended up working his way all the way up to a ferrari....or the bum on the street corner that makes 85k a year and other stupid urban legends. Just that there's options out there

I agree that there are options out there for people without a High school diploma, although at the same time now a days even uni graduates are a dime a dozen and willing to work almost any job even if its low pay crappy job due to economy etc... heck some even have 2 degrees and still have a problem...

Best bet imo is to try and enroll part time in some sort of course to get either your GED or equivalent as well as apply for a job... at least this way any future employer may look at you and think at least your trying to better yourself...

Not sure when the hiring manager arrives, but I would call him/her tomorrow and let them know that you are excited and motivated about the opportunity, ready to work on any shift, and was disappointed to not get the call.

Ask if they can call you if someone calls in sick, they need someone to fill in...whatever. You're ready and willing to work.

Verify that they have your contact information and thank them for their time.

That's not annoying. It's showing that you want the job.

Matt

LBF, I also think you'd be better off putting the job search on hold, and finishing your GED. Maybe I will get flamed for this, but right now, the government is paying you and I think giving you health benefits. It's a pretty good setup, even though living with your grandparents sometimes annoys you. Take advantage of this and do your GED. Treat it like a job.. Work on it 40 hours a week. Set a schedule, 8 am to 5 pm (or whatever). Study/do homework during that time. It will teach you self discipline.

If you start working at a grocery store, I can almost guarantee that you will never go back and finish your GED, because it's going to be a lot harder when you are working.

It may not seem this way, but you are pretty lucky to be on gov assistance and be able to live with your grandparents. The annoyances you have now are going to be really minor compared to the real world. (Like having no or expensive health insurance, difficult boss, etc)... I am not trying to be condescending, but IMO this is the perfect time to finish off the GED. Buckle down and study/finish whatever you need to do. Ask you counseler if there is any kind of GED program or tutoring.. Do you have a family member that would help you study? Explore this.
