Jurupari, Satanoperca or Geophagus?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not to mention S. leucosticta was only re-elevated to a distinct species from S. jurupari by Kullander in 1989, prior to that it was thought to be a color morph of Jurupari (despite being described as a seperate species in the 1800's). The hobby tends to take a long time to accept/keep up with changes in the scientific side, hence why you see most S. leucosticta still sold as 'Geophagus jurupari.'

Just so you know, Satanoperca are very prone to hole in the head disease...Perfect water quality is a must for them in my experience.

While we are at it, what's the best way to sex Satanoperca species? They are supposed to be isomorphic...I have two 5-6" S. juripari and may add some S. leucosticta and S. deemon soon.

Venting ... but I am sure you knew that answer was coming!

The mislabling of Jupari seems pretty common, I've seen them listed on a website (fairly reputable) as S. Leucosticta, but with the common name Guyana Jupari.

I wouldn't call that mislabeled travis2k becuase they got the scientific name correct. Jurupari is the common name for all four non-spoted Satanoperca (S. jurupari, S. leucosticta, S. mapiritensis, and S. pappaterra) kind of like blue acara is the common name for 3 species, Festivum 8 species, ect.

Makes sense, so they chose the correct common name, it just happens to be the same as other species. Same goes for green terrors.

The only problem I have with that type of system, is that many stores wont put both the scientific and common name, so the fish becomes a "Jupari".

Which I now happily know represents multiple Satanoperca species.

Exactly like green terrors.

Yes, it is a bad system. Common names in general area rather a bad idea, but it's a system that hasn't changed in decades and sadly probably won't. I love LFS that post the scientific names for cichlids, rare but one or two of the better ones usually do.

so I have been looking at both the Jurupari and the Leucosticta and have been having a hard time choosing. I agree with japes that the Leucosticta are more beautiful when adults however I can get an incredible deal on 4 4" jurupari for $40 total. I also have a friend with the Leucosticta who have just spawned recently.

any chance i could get some opinions on what other members would choose? sorry for the derailment op.

also is they're anything wrong with keeping the jurupari with Leucosticta? i'd imagine they'd cross beard and make hybrids?
