Just A Few Questions.....ANNNDD

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the SW guy at big als said "the most you're going to get out of an overflow box that hangs and is not drilled into your tank is about 600gph which is about half of what you need, you're wanting to get at least 1200gph of flow circulating the water in your tank"

is this true or is he just trying to make me spend more money on a sump? lol

he also said overflow's are very noisy but, i thought they just dragged water down a tube by gravity, not a pump.....so why would that be noisy?

oh wait I'm assuming its like a sink that's constantly draining right? so you get that sucking noise, im also assuming that they make silencers for them and one the overflow has leveled out and everythings running that noise stops

also how does heating work for a tank? like the wattage, how many wpg kinda thing

he also said that live rock needs light to be "live" or else you loose all the things needed from it to sustain a successful reef

but all the curing videos i've seen place live rock into a bin with a heater and powerhead and seal the top so that there's no light in the bin which stop algae growth

of those lights i'd get the sunpaq.. you may just want to look at pendant halides.. cheaper than a deluxe unit, but still halides

he's right... if you don't plan on having any powerheads or a skimmer. turnovers include all pumps

it's a splashing noise... i find it relaxing

i usually do 5 WPG... but a 400 watt or 2x 250's or something would be fine

you only need one bacterium to start cycling a tank, so you need SOME bacteria source, but not ALL the rocks needs to start out live. in my 75 i had about 40 pounds of base rock and started with only about 15 live
rock kept in a lightless bin just stops algae from growing, the bacteria is still there so it's still live

i do plan on getting power heads and a skimmer in the sump, and i didnt plan on getting metal halides, and i like the light i linked cus it comes with 4 actinics T-5's and moonlights and suspension kit for a decent price id just have to buy the 4 daylights

whats the major difference between cured and uncured? i guess cured you can just put straight into your tank if its already cycled? is there still the risks of diseases or pests like aiptasia, bubble algae, different worms, mantis shrimp etc....... with cured rock? or no because its "cured live rock"......dumb question?

what about dried live rock? http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/Eco-RoX-(-Fiji-Rock-)/c7/index.html

is that any good?

i forgot to edit the link for the lights last time i redifined the search and got this

http://www.thefind.com/search?query=60"+aquarium+light

cured just means all the stuff that died off from harvesting and shipping is gone, so it wont rot in your tank
if you bought only cured rock your tank WOULD be cycled
cured rock can contain hitchikers, just depends on how it's kept

dried live rock is dead rock.. i wouldn't ever pay more than $3 a pound for it
the rock in your link is better than just any old rock, because it used to be coral or live rock.. so it at least LOOKS like 'regular' live rock

at big als they just got a shipment of 500lbs of live rocklives really nice. BUT i think it was like 10 bucks a lb....... can you link me a good site that sells and ships it for a decent price? im looking at marine depot

edit: marine depot had nothing but fake

now im trying liveaquaria

shipping rock is expensive... 'nuff said

ill just buy the ugly stuff thats cheap at big als, and make it pretty with corals and stuff (:

like i said, you can mix it with base rock for considerably less
