When people promise you that what they're saying about the animal (they are selling to you) is true and that they wouldn't mess you about or lie to you etc don't believe it!

My dad drove out an hour and a half to pick up a blue tongued skink that was "dog tame" and was promised I would have "no problem in that area". Went to collect it, and his dad (who was sorting it out as the fella was out) owns two male adult iguanas and will hold them but wont even touch the bluey as it will bite him.

Waste of bloody time (around 3 hours plus) and petrol money to be messed about. Not to mention I was really looking forward to having it. The lad works for the RSPCA too :grinno: I don't see why people can't just be honest.

I was lucky I never put money forward first but I thought I'd tell people so you can all make sure your very careful, especially if your planning having an animal shipped to you. Alot of time wasters and liars out there...

Oh yeah And I almost ordered 20 quid worths of food for it last night and extra things for its cage as i was guaranteed it was tame and enjoyed being out. *I was 100% I'd buy it if it was what they said it to be.

Tbh Ophi I am usually safer than safe. An untame BTS ain't a problem for me, but I just wanted a tame lizard yet with more personality than a gecko, but less size than an iggy LOl. You know one you can slug about whatching T.V with? And since I already knew all I needed to know about BTS's I thought it would be an excellent choice.

It weren't too bad for me but its just an example of following your head, not you heart when it says this fella who works for the R.S.P.C.A and seems totally genuine has to be telling the truth.

I hope my experience will help others though.

Want personality?

Gold Skinks. You can't handle them, but they are food-aggressive and they have so much personality to them. But if you means one that can be impersonalized... I guess you answered your own question.

That's unusual for a BTS...they're generally quite docile lizards...I love them to death and hope to have another one day. Maybe another "nicer" one will cross your path soon.

I've heard of them being docile when tame but when untame those who cross their path beter watch out LOL!

Reputation, reputation, reputation.

Excuse me?

Loconorc this is from years of reading.. what I have seen them like in the wild.. and talking to breeders. Don't you accuse me of following an animals 'bad repuation' because if I don't know for myself, I follow what is known of them, and give them the benefit of the doubt.

Boa's (for the most part) have a reputation for being generally docile, but I've learnt FIRST HAND when not handled they are generally very snappy, more so than most corns and royals (corns rattling their tails and royals curling into a ball).

Get one thing straight: I am not one of these to listen to reputations of animals, but what I will do is follow the experiences of others and what is (sopposadly) known of that species for guidance, anybody needs to do that when learning about/handling an animal they are unfamiliar with. When I hear a rumour of such, I research and try find out for myself, so I think you should learn that before we cross eachothers path.
This is comin from someone owning an adult (now untame) adult iguana mate.

reputations? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

Reputations are moot!!

"iguanas are mean, iguanas are nice, male iguanas are meaner than females, male iguanas get tame easier" "Piranhas are vicious and bloodthirsty"

If any of the above is particularly true, then I'm a pink flamingo!!

We have a pair of iguanas. my fiance has a male, and I have a female. I have tamed them both myself, and I have never noticed a difference between their behaviors out of cage. If my fiance holds either of them, they are more active than when they're with me.

My piranha is the most un-vicious fish, ever. My goldfish are at least brave enough to brush against me when my hands are in their tank. My piranha stays to himself in his cave until I'm out.

This has nothing to do with skinks, but is more to object reputations, and stereotypes.

it IS the individual animal. Not all iguanas when tame are as quiet and calm as mine are. Some are more so, some much less.

Another example. I have land hermit crabs, Coenobita Cypleatus (purple pincher) and Coenobita Compressus (Ecuadorian) and between members of the SAME SPECIES (purple pinchers) I have vast differences like a male who will come FAR out of his shell for me, and his female counterpart (we call her his girlfriend) who won't come out of her shell at all for me. Same thing, different pair, but it's the female who will come out, and the male who's too shy. I've had them all for a long time, so they're defiantely used to people. it's just they're individuals with individual personalities.

BTW, I'm glad you didn't support the bloke's lying habit by purchasing that beastie!! ^^
