Like Jessica said, this all comes down to research, research, research. You can't just go on only two sources of info. Read books, check out websites, talk to experienced hobbyists, etc, etc. Before getting into any new species, I suggest gathering information from:
- at least 3 people experienced in said species (emails & forums count)
- at least 2 books on the subject that is 5 yrs old or younger
- at least 5 websites on the subject
....then take all that info you've absorbed and average it out. If you see the same thing repeated 6-7 times, its probably accurate. The main thing we're trying to dissuade is blind compliance.
Another example...from me personally: I say Amazon tree boas are mean snakes. That's not just a blind & hollow opinion that I'm spouting off. Every specimen I've dealt with has been mean. Every person I've known who has kept one says they're mean. Everything I've read on them says they're mean. With that kind of evidence, it can safely be said that ATBs are mean.
