Just a little advice for people

Giving the horse another kick here....

Like Jessica said, this all comes down to research, research, research. You can't just go on only two sources of info. Read books, check out websites, talk to experienced hobbyists, etc, etc. Before getting into any new species, I suggest gathering information from:

- at least 3 people experienced in said species (emails & forums count)
- at least 2 books on the subject that is 5 yrs old or younger
- at least 5 websites on the subject

....then take all that info you've absorbed and average it out. If you see the same thing repeated 6-7 times, its probably accurate. The main thing we're trying to dissuade is blind compliance.

Another example...from me personally: I say Amazon tree boas are mean snakes. That's not just a blind & hollow opinion that I'm spouting off. Every specimen I've dealt with has been mean. Every person I've known who has kept one says they're mean. Everything I've read on them says they're mean. With that kind of evidence, it can safely be said that ATBs are mean.

You dont have to go by specific quantities on info, thats just a waste of time. Find someone who knows what theyre talking about, and go to town.

AGAIN, I wasnt talking about animal reputations, I was talking about the breeders and sellers.

Okay fine, you're talking about breeders and sellers....even so....what if that one person really doesn't know what they're talking about? How do you really know if they're feeding you bull or not?

Because of reputations... If so-and-so-reptiles inc. has agood reputation, then its a good idea to buy from them. If you can find a lot of people who have good experience with them, if they put a lot of effort into their animals, if their website is good, if they make an effort to talk to you... That sort of thing. You wouldnt buy from Mites-R-Us or Hustler Joes Imports would you?

If you dont really know, THEN LOOK ELSEWHERE. If its really that hard, there are a million and one breeders out there...

Oh and Jessica. When did I say research itself is a waste of time? All Im saying is dont spend 12 hours a day reading every caresheet you can find. first of all, most are HORRIBLE, written by 10 year olds who kept a sav alive for a couple days. Second, youre going to find conflicting information. Third, youre not supposed to go by the books! Stick to the basic requirements, and put your own spin on it. Problem is, most people get so carried away making it look pretty they forget all about husbandry.

Hope that makes sense? Lol, Im a bit rattled today...

Good advice.

I'm getting my first herp soon and I'll be starting out with a corn. I expect it to be all hissy and such, but plan on getting a baby so that if it tags me, it wont be such a big deal, and I'll easily tame it with time.

I guess BTS's aren't so easy to tame once they've become un-tame? Or perhaps they don't let loose once they have a go at you?

Why would you get an 'un-tame' BTS in the first place? Once you get past the flood of Wild caught Irian Jayas and Tanimbars, Blueys are angels. Northerns especially. Have you seen Andrew Seike's orange northerns? WOW

Again once their tame dude :)
When theyre untame more like hells angels than angels hehe
