Just bought 220gal for$100

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would reseal the whole thing, and also put a bottom trim on it!!! But would still be a good deal after doing all that..

+1 since its empty and it won't take very long at all to do.

That's a heck of a deal though.

On my Craig's list there's a guy asking 150 for a cracked 110 gallon haha.... Just gotta stock it to find the deals!

Good deal! In lieu of a bottom trim you could also build in brackets on the stand that support all sides of the glass and silicone it in.

Bottom trims serve two purposes, one is to structural support the tank, and the other is to support the weight evenly on the stand.. I wouldnt trust having a full 200+ gallon tank sitting on its bottom glass!!!

+1

the structural is the big one, and since you will be needing a stand you can build in a bottom perimeter brace. thats a lot of weight pushing out for just silicone to not peel.

I put a layer of styrofoam under all tanks 75gal & up. You can get the styrofoam insulation at any Home Depot/Lowes. It helps to distribute the weight evenly. Good Luck. I bought a used 150 last weekend off CL & I've got some cleaning ahead of me as well.

Do I really need a bottom trim brace. Tank is 1/2 thick will not warp

No, you do not need bottom trim. I would build a sturdy stand with 3/4" plywood across the top (where the tank will sit), then put a piece of styrofoam insulation on top of the plywood to even out any irregularities.. so it will look like:
Tank->Styro sheet->plywood-> stand base. Obviously, the stand base would need to support all edges, I would probably add middle support too in the base.

And if the tank holds water and the silicone looks in good shape, I would definitely not reseal it.. Why tinker with something that already works and risk breaking it? .. Ideally, you'd fill it in a garage or somewhere and let it sit for a week or so before bringing into the house.. Of course, make sure it is on a good supporting stand before the test fill.
