shortnose gar? haha i actually thought this was a long nose gar because the tank beside this one that i got, had gars with shorter snouts :p

I was actually going to say shortnose gar. Only because of the snout length and the spots on the body.

I don't think that is a real name? I think the spotted gar is the only short nose of them all?

shortnose gar, spotted gar and Florida gar are 3 different species of gar!

To the OP, that's a Florida gar as some people have already stated.

Also, some people really need to read the stickies...

Short nose gar and long nose is a stuff way to ID a gar. Florida and spotted gar are so close. Best way to ID is spotting style, the rows (if any) of teeth in its snout and also the secondary coloration on the gar. Funny people pay money for these. In Texas they are a problem fish. We catch them all the time and most fishermen throw them up on the bank to die. I moved to PA and people are paying 60-100 bucks for these guys.

They are not a problem fish rather there are some really stupid fishermen out there who do not not understand the ecological importance of gars and other "problem fishes."

it's funny how some stupid people think the fish that live in America for over 100 million years are a problem fish.

I'm just stating the fact. In Texas were I grew up they are considered a problem fish by everyone. Calling someone stupid because your opinion differs from theirs is not a good idea. Especially when you don't even know the person. I never said I throw them on the bank did I? You see them at every big lake and river I was close to.. gar after gar thrown on the bank because people think they will attack and hurt you, eat the good game fish, or are afraid to take the hook out of their mouths.. so they cut the line throw them over. Same with turtles and snakes.. The lakes are loaded with the fish. Every time we go fishing we are promised to catch a hand ful.. some huge. My uncle had one in the boat that was 6ft long. He caught it on a catfish rig at that.

then you lived in an area that have a lot of stupid people! I have never heard anyone say they are problem fish!
for the red color: those people need to educate themselves about fish! it's people without knowledge will say gar are problem fish!
blue: that is alligator gar, they are protected fish in Texas! you can only keep 1 fish per day according to the length bag limit and have to release the rest to safety.

HungDang summed it up pretty darn good.

I never implied that you were stupid rather the fishermen who threw them on the bank were stupid. The opinion that they're a nuisance fish is pretty terrible considering that they're native; if anything, many of the "game fishes" are nuisance fishes as they are introduced. Besides, killing the gars only hurts one's chances of catching the "the big one" for game fishes because the gars eat the easier ones to catch, e.g. the weak, sick, and other easy prey, while the strong survive; that's just basic fish management, though, which is apparently beyond some of those fishermen.
